My tanks dimensions in the display area are around 36" L x 10.5" W x 12" water height. I originally had a fluval CP1 and CP4 setup in this tank that were given to me for free by a family member. The CP4 was likely too powerful for my tank, but was doing an ok job and didnt blow the sandbad around. Unfortunately it got some sort of short circuiting and electrified by water so I removed it. Thank good my tank has only just finished cycling so I have no livestock stocked yet.

I'm wondering what I should consider doing to replace/upgrade the CP4 I have removed. I have been looking into the Nero 5 and have wondered if using one Nero 5 would be a good idea for my tank due to its length. I could possibly also use a Nero 5 in combination with the smaller CP1. Any suggestions or am I just wasting money by considering a Nero 5 for this tank. I know a lot of people have used MP10s on this tank but these seem to be more costly than the Nero 5.

I kind of enjoy the fact that the Nero has an app so I could keep it on a random flow pattern

I dont have an apex or any sort of controller. Would be great to have on eventually though, just trying to keep the cost down somewhat while still getting some functionality

Would the Nero 5 be too powerful for my tank though? Could I get away with using just one Nero 5? I'm hoping maybe I could invest in it and use it in the future if I upgrade my tank to a larger size

Still scared to invest on the nero since my tank is reasonably small but I feel it will last better than some of the cheaper jebao ones

Do they last though? I dont want to have to constantly replace something which is why I figure investing in a nero might be the way to go. Just worried it might be too powerful for my tank and I could only afford 1 for now

If you're looking for something cheap and effective, maybe Koralia nano 425 or 565s. I have 2 nano 425s on my nuvo 20L and its running great.

Get the jebao slw wavemaker series. Can get on Amazon but best to get on Ebay for much cheaper (Its what I did) They are just like the Nero minus the app, but have a nice controller you can mount. They have 3 sizes, I would get the slw - 20, would only need one for a cube 30g

How long do jebaos last though? I hear they dont last that long. That's what worries me. Also, does the night sensor work on them to reduce flow at light out or is that a separate thing?

I've had a Jebao PP-4 on my 20L running perfectly fine for 2+ years. Some last and some don't. Thing is, if they don't last and you have to replace it you might still be spending less than if you got one of the expensive pumps like a Nero. That's a risk I'm willing to take, I always have one or two new backups just incase.

Two slw-20s would be perfect for that tank... you can sync them as well... $150 shipped for both

They do have a night sensor on most if not all RW and SLW models. While Nero and echotech MP models are more reliable, you're paying the price. Meanwhile these Jebao are 1/4 of the price and are fairly reliable. Everyone once in a while someone will complain they break but most of the time they last a long time and can easily be fixed with replacement parts which are found everywhere.

If its a cube, you probably wont need two of them. Especially if you have a return pump already getting surface agitation for you I use two 20's on my 75g, they are more powerful than people think. If you did have two on a cube, you'd end up dialing them down so much it might be pointless.

another idea is a pair of mp40’s turned down super low then when you upgrade to a larger size you dont have to worry about it.
i have a mp40 and mp10 on a 24gal cube and its not to much have the mp10 turned half way up and the mp40 barely on.

Exactly. You buy 3 Jebao's (Probably dont need to) and come out less than some MP's or Nero's. The leg up is the apps to control but honestly its overrated considering how often we really arent changing wave patters after being set

It's the 30l so a 3 foot long tank. Just saw theres a slw-20m model that has an app apparantly. Hmmmm maybe I will consider jebao..do you think the app or non app version is best? Anyone have their wifi version? I would swing for mp10s since a lot of people use them on this tank but they're more expensive than the neros and havent been able to find any used ones
