Weeble's House O' Tanks

Pardon the iPhone video, but I was pretty excited and wanted to snag this quick. I did the 2.1 Firmware update on the AP700 (super easy, really fast) and it appears that now my moonlights will work. I still have a few hours of regular light left but fingers crossed!

Scratch that, they're working. Well kinda. The lunar lights are considerably brighter than I'd like to see. Bright enough that a couple of my fish are pretty confused.

The reason why I didn't think that they were working before was because I actually hadn't updated the firmware. The updater software would run through like it was updating but then it never completed the process. Apparently third time's a charm.

Now to see if the fish will go back to sleep.

Review on the hose:

It works great, but you'll need a BIG pump to make it work properly. I'm running a Pan World 100PX-X (1270 GPH) on my mixing/pumping station and it isn't outputting enough pressure to make the hose expand to its more rounded shape. The end result is that it works, but it's REALLY slow.

I might experiment with a different pump, just for time savings, or I might just deal with it. Regardless, it serves the purpose that I wanted and works very well.

Back from vacation and no major catastrophes. Huzzah! Alkalinity dropped a touch, down to 7.11, from what appears to be a massive growth spurt...of coralline algae in my sump :| The corals all look great, save for a small frag of Bird of Paradise which has started to STN from the base. However the branches look great so I'm going to frag them off and see if I can save it.

The only real oddity for the week is that my skimmer didn't skim nearly the amount that it usually does. All of my parameters are pretty much dead on where I left them so it's not that the tank has suddenly gotten cleaner. Oh well, a mystery that will remain a mystery I suppose.

It's water change day (the first in two weeks...oops!) so I grabbed a few new shots. Colors and growth are still looking good. Really happy with things right now. Even starting to see the first hints of color in the Bonsai after bringing it home almost fully brown.

Contemplation time. I'm thinking about a lighting change.

It's not that the AP700 does a bad job, or that it does anything less than what I expected from it. I love the light and will continue to sing its praises. I just...miss my T5s. I love the even flood of light that T5 provides, and so I'm now starting my search for a 6-bulb fixture that I can use to retrofit with the AP700. I'm opting for a fixture search for two reasons. First, I'm not in a huge hurry and second, because it's easier than building a floating canopy to mount a couple of retrofit kits.

My thought is to run the T5s for about 4-6 hours per day, sort of as a midday sun approach. I'll probably run a 50/50 mixture of ATI Blue Plus and ATI Coral Plus, or a single Coral Plus and then an Aquablue Special. I've run both of these setups in the past with great results and I like that bright white with a pop of blue look that they provide.

The question that I don't know the answer to yet: I have my AP700 about 13 inches off the water line. That's pretty high for T5 and I don't want to flood the room with light from the fixture. I can't lower the fixture because I need the AP700 to stay high, so I might end up having to do a floating canopy anyway. We'll see when the time gets closer, but I'm going to start looking at some designs just in case.

Looks great:D You will be much happier after you add the T5s. Especially if SPS are your main coral of choice. Always hard to make that sort of thing look clean without a hood or floating canopy, good luck!

Have you watched the brs episode where they did the ap700 hybrid with 4 t5
Looked so sick man makes me want to do that for my next build

Also has anyone ever told you have a radio voice

Yeah, that's actually what really got my gears turning on doing the hybrid. I've been considering it for a while but then seeing it done elsewhere was the push I needed I guess.

The 80 is 48x24x16, so it's the same footprint as the 120, just shorter.

And yep. I worked in radio for a few years and still do commercial voiceover :)
