Hi all!
Not currently a marine tank owner myself, yet! Looking to continue to put in the ground work before committing myself - hopefully this is the correct place (please re-direct me if not!).
Despite having been involved in the aquatic hobby for many years, I have never directly owned/been responsible for a marine tank. Freshwater (specifically Amazon biotopes) and turtles (Sternotherus odoratus) have been my ‘niche’ so to speak. To be honest, marine never really interested me until.... my youngest started watching Tanked on catch up Now TV. PLEASE DON’T STOP READING THERE! I only gained an interest in a few types of fish - nothing on fish keeping and I am more than aware (as, now, is my son!) on the programmes short comings!
I will be in the fortunate position very soon to be able to invest in my first marine set up. I fully appreciate that this will require a huge time investment just to be up and running and ‘mature’, but I would rather start correct with a clear final vision than fumble and bumble along the way!
I am planning for an approx. 300 uk gallon tank with 100 gallon sump. It will be a FOWLR setup with a lot of live rock aquascaping (flooring has already been strengthened!). Plan on having over sized skimmer and macro filtration. Any advice on equipment etc would be great!
On the stocking side, I’m not looking for a huge number of fish (have ‘been there’ with great shoals of tetras etc’) and have a few questions regarding this (once again, I hope this is the correct way/place to ask!). I find fuzzy dwarf lion fish incredibly appealing and would like a couple of these. The harlequin tusk was the one from the programme that grabbed my attention. I would hope to be able to home a group of four or five pearl scale butterflies - for some reason different patterns don’t really appeal to me, rather have a solid group within the tank. As an oddball fan, I am intrigued by a sea goblin. Also, my partner likes dwarf angels.
So,
This would be more than spacious enough for multiple dwarf fuzzies correct (can be target fed)?
Would a harlequin tusk be compatible with the other fish?
I have read in numerous places pearlscale butterflies can be homed in groups in large enough tanks? Do you agree? Is this large enough?
Would a sea goblin be feasible? Would it be difficult to keep in this size set up (can be target fed, again)?
Is the tank big enough, with a lot of aquascaping to break line of sight etc, to home for, say, a flame and coral beauty?
Would all of this, if compatible, be over stocking?
Oh, and puffers. My son has just walked in and asked what I was doing! He now insists that I ask about them - any type would fit here? Would they push the bio load over the top? Would they be a threat to the lions? Is a spiny boxfish (if I could find one excepting food) totally out of the question?
Anyway, I have stated/asked a lot in a short amount of time... apologies if this is too much too soon (or I totally the wrong place). Many thanks to anyone who has stuck with me up to here, more thanks to anyone who considered replying and a million thanks to anyone who actually does!
Be well,
Chris.
