So I bought the Apex EL monitor last month (yup, one of those lucky few - and I love it). But now my inbox is full of "Hey, you bought that, now if you just add this module to your system your reefing life will be complete." marketing messages from BRS.

Can someone please tell me how to keep those from working so well? My credit card balance would appreciate it. :)

What happened with these? Did they only make so many then stop?

Don't know...but I'm doing my part to make this a financially successful proposition for them going forward. They should call it the Apex QM monitor - wait, that's probably the marketing departments name for what they do with my email account.

They got me on the G5, ordered a G4 to add a 4th and great deal, discounted with a diffuser. Great!! just what i need.. well we dont have anymore so were going to give you the G5 for the same price! Sweet, rite? nope 900.00 bucks later i have 3 G5s and 3 G4s ugh! finally got the G4s sold so it all worked out.. Sort of, but it happens to me all the time with them. the one thing i will say is that when they had there sale deals on the Abyzz, they got me too. but it was well worth it.

I'm one of the two moderators for the #AskBRSTV group on Facebook, and I have noticed a substantial amount of users talk positively about their experiences with the BRS Special Edition ApexEL. I recall, from a recent livestream, Ryan stating that it's possible that it may come back, but he mentioned the fact that other vendors may not appreciate the exclusivity of Neptune Systems working with BRS on it. He also stated that he doesn't know when future runs will happen, if at all. I don't have any inside knowledge of whether another run of them will be available in the future, but it's clear that demand is there. I have seen many hobbyists begin to dabble with extending the functionality of theirs by installing additional modules. If the demand continues to be displayed by the community, then I think there is a strong possibility of future products being available.

This is true - they discussed it a bit and then said they are not sure how other vendors would look at it. Also how it could affect Neptune. They wanted to test the waters, got some positive feedback, well received, etc. So who knows.

E-commerce marketing and re-targeting. Gotta love it.

I will say this though, BRS is a good company and I don't mind being re-targeted on every platform I'm on. I do understand some might think it's annoying but that is the state of online marketing these days unfortunately.

In regards to how to keep it from working so well: I would use gsuite's email forwarding service to create an account and place orders then drop that email once I get my shipment. Oh and don't forget to be in incognito/private mode in your browser. Sounds extreme and like a lot of effort which is why I don't mind but I know there's some people out there that take offense so there you go.

Clearly the obvious thing Neptune needs to do is to just make the ApexEL available for everyone. Clearly there is interest in a basic monitoring system, and it could even push more sales into their ecosystem. Paying $500 for the ApexEL was a big chunk of money to drop for a controller, and although I use and love it, having a cheaper way into it could be a huge benefit to them.

All kidding aside, it's a great product sold by a great vendor. All the marketing in the world wouldn't make me buy something if both Neptune and BRS hadn't earned my trust.

Surprised as well this isn't a formal product. I'm sure others like me didn't like the entry fee into automation and really only want monitoring (which is still true - no energy bar here). I had a price point in mind and when I saw this offered, and under my price point by $50.00 - so they missed out there ;) - I jumped on it. Couldn't be happier with that decision.

Interesting and more savviness on BRS part...they don't send me Energy Bar recommendations. You gotta respect knowing your customers, too.

Good advice, I just have multiple email accounts and the account I provide to retailers does not push notifications to my phone and I don't check it unless I have a specific reason to do so. Also, if you don't want to bother with private mode there is a cool plugin put out by the Electronic Frontier Foundation called Privacy Badger.

It's all apart of Ryan's master plan ....

Just to clarify, you purchased the "BRS Special Edition ApexEL", correct?

The "ApexEL" is still readily available..

How long do you think you will hold out before you buy the Energy Bar :p

Special Edition Apex EL Monitor only. I did consider getting old 4 plug one just for cabinet lights off of a contact switch but then I realized my cabinet light has an on/off switch already! :)

Are you using the float bracket assembly for monitoring? Any thoughts on it?

Yeah I am...pretty slick they put that together. It was actually a bonus I didn't realize I was getting until it showed up. Surprised as well it isn't a 'thing to buy'...or if it is I can't find it. Very nicely done...too bad my dog knocked it off the table and broke one side of the bracket (easy repair with super glue since the materials used where thick and high quality).

I use it as an ATO backup mostly (and yes, I forget to refill the reservoir) but I've also been notified when my return pump burbed momentarily and came back on. It does take up a whole breakout out box spot though so losing some options but I had planned on ORP module from the beginning and it has another breakout box connection so...no impact to my plans. Plus I could/can always modify it direct to B/O box and have all the connections available.

The upper mounting piece? Or one of the float brackets? I can send you a replacement part if you’d like :).

Pretty surprised it could break by falling off the table- I can’t break them by hand with reasonable force!

Yeah can definitely wire the floats to a breakout box instead. I designed a small PCB that lets you connect both it and a breakout box to one port, but haven’t been able to get the components due to coronavirus. :(

I just love how they released a best of lighting video yesterday and they kept harping on and on about renting a par meter and the cost to rent a par meter JUST went up from $50 to 70. Well played indeed.
