That’s blue god dang it
My 4th grade class started a freshwater tank. All the fish died during a power outage over a weekend. There were many upset 4th graders on Monday. On Tuesday my dad, awesome guy that he is showed up with fish to restock the tank. One of them was (still to this day) the prettiest black lace angelfish I have ever seen. We finished the school year with a single fish in the tank and 20 traumatized children. I was accustomed to fish on fish violence. My teacher and classmates, not so much.I have a Sideshow Bob and a Selma, clownfish. I think it’s fitting lol.
I find “angelfish” misleading for the freshwater variety. I’ve never had marine angels. But the freshwater can be quite nasty especially with eggs.
No boss, this is a blue tang“Purple” tang will forever upset me.

No boss, this is a blue tang![]()
Blue tang, or Hippo, or “9 tang” as we call it locally.
It took me forever to realize they were all referring to the same fish
To me it looks like the color, indigo. Maybe perception of seeing colors is off, haha.“Purple” tang will forever upset me.

Well that is… confusing to say the least. The fact they both have a gold trim like that is what’s funny.Okay here we go;
Over here certain wrasses from the genera Paracheilinus and Cirrhilabrus have 1 shared part of their common name.
They are known as Dwarf Parrots, however! Not all of them are called that - there’s some scenarios where we get Fairy and Flasher Wrasses (I.e. Holy Grail Flasher Wrasse and Katoi Fairy Wrasse).
Then we have Fireball Angel (Centropyge acanthops) and the Flame Back Angel (Centropyge aurantonotus). How does that look like a ball of fire?!

Next up, the Horseshoe Tang, Acanthurus fowleri. Do you see any comparison?![]()

Oh! And, we have the Goldrim Tang and the Powder Brown Tang;
I have caused many arguments in LFSs because of these two names
Enjoy the PowderBrown (Acanthurus nigricans) and Goldrim (Acanthurus japonicus)

Should I keep going?
I agree with the powder brown.There are lots of descriptive names that drive me nuts. Powder brown is one. Green mandarin is another because so many of them express more blue than green. Red scooter blenny is not red. Purple tang, is also on this list.
Than call it Japonicus!I agree with the powder brown.
I love the fish, hate the name.
There ya go. when I got dumb dumb I was told he'd eat aips if I starved him. problem is I'd have to pull him rfom the tank to starve him.Mine is named 'Filet.' It was meant as a not so subtle warning that if she moved on from eating Duncanopsammia to Goniopora or Euphyllia, she would end up battered and fried. So far she seems to understand, although I think she is starting to nip zoas a little now.
The National Aquarium has the common name as Japanese Surgeonfish. But yes, better than "powder brown"Than call it Japonicus!
Sounds a bit more exotic, isn’t it?![]()
I want to know, but just can't Google "how to care for a slippery dick?" Or what does a slippery dick taste like? "
You need to enlist the services ofimagine that in your browsing history at work or such..
better go incognito!
Listen, all is fair in love and naming your fish ridiculous names! But I don't think it gets much weirder than Gobert the Watchman Goby. Thanks, @Gumbies R Us.What fish name makes you think, “Why in the world did they name it that?!”
To be fair, out of context that name is really oddLawnmower blenny

Out of context how? It's about dumb fish names... the common names of fish, not about when people name their fish "Swimmy McSwimFace".To be fair, out of context that name is really odd![]()
Wonder whether it bit the person describing it?Acanthonus armatus
