What’s wrong with my finger leather?

For about 4-5 days now it’s been completely bent out of shape, almost flopped on its side.

It was completely closed for a couple of days, but is actually beginning to open again now (while still being bent out of shape)

It seems to be shedding, which is what I assumed, but there’s also a bunch of brown hairy/stringy crap coming off it, and some brown on the stalk. What could this be?

Lol my thoughts exactly.

I’ve helped it shed with a turkey baster and got rid of all the loose skin attached, but none of the fuzzy brown crap came with it :/

Lol I didn’t even think to turn the lights white…

it’s actually green. Algae possibly?

It had been happy for around 2 months. Had a little bit of a nutrient spike, mainly due to having to leave home for a while with nobody to properly maintain the water. Once I came back, it was unhappy, bent over and noticed this. I just uploaded another pic I’m white light, seems to maybe be algae??

Looks like a little gha on it. Manually remove that. Might take a little while to bounce back, but leathers are usually resilient

Yes agreed !!! GHA . Get a good CUC for it and the rest of your tank . Natural removal is always the way to go

What’s chemistry look like in terms of parameters?
System appears newish.
GHA, remove that, check PO4 to be in the 0.05ppm range for a new system less than 1 year.

I have a cleaner shrimp and an a emerald crab. Along with some hitchhiker cleanups, amiphipods etc. anything in particular I should get?

Would I be save taking it out of the water, and scrubbing lightly with something like a tooth brush or peeling it off with my fingers?

Check that phosphate, it should be 0.03 to a max of say .1ppm. 1.0 is too, too high, it will bring pest algaes and they slow the good guys population.
If high, mop that organic up with a GFO.

7dkh is not what something I’ve calculated and aimed for, that’s just where it is at the moment and don’t currently have any buffer, but going to order some shortly and get that up a bit.

I think I’ve read the pho incorrectly when measuring and increased by a factor of ten.

Might be a loaded question full of biased answers. I’ll start… I would not start any other type of chemicals or reactors just yet. Too much in too little time = bye bye tank. I would manually remove the hair algae and add some snails, nassarius as well for the sand bed. Give it a couple of weeks for them to work and start/continue with some regular water changes and changing/cleaning filter media. That should make a heavy dent in the issue.

Okay good stuff! I’ll look at getting some snails. Hermits okay?

I’ll be good to continue NOPOX for now, or should I stop with that and try to eat through the issue naturally?
