What a find!!! SCORE!!

How long should I leave water in to test it’s fluid holding capabilities?

I test for 24 hrs with a few pumps running inside to create flexing and pressure.
Good find, if it makes you happy, great find...
Ditch the heater, not worth using a used heater.

That wet/dry sure brings back memories.. I would ditch it too. Get a real sump or build a sump.

Congrats on your find! Craigslist has some incredible deals as well. I just scored a less than 2 year old Red Sea 425XL with 2 Ecotech XR15 G4 Pros, a Ecotech Vectra M1, 2 Ecotech MP10 Quiet Drives, and a Reef Octopus 150INT Regal for $500!

That is insane I would’ve jumped all over that.

+1 on all of the above.

That’s an awesome deal as well!

Planet and DFW (makes the stands) charge good money it’s worth it in the end...it took them 2 full month they lost order sheet and took absolutely forever to build/deliver it. I still sell their tanks they are well built and are reliable. I worked for one their largest commercial clients at the time big LFS in Dallas. I paid $850 cost not retail for Planet to build custom 50 gallon rimless tideline 36x18x18” (external overflow and was included) with thicker starefire glass, bottom trim they don’t come with that drilled return, and black silicone even then still insane lol. I got a costal classic mocha stand for $165 haha. I feel your pain spending a chuck on a planet build.

I plan on leaving the tank in the back of the truck all night. It is filled as full as it can be without spilling over to the drilled holes within the overflows.

Why chunk a heater if it is still in working order? It is being tested in a 5 gallon bucket right now and it is heating. I have to check that it doesn’t have a stuck on problem but used heaters have uses. Water mixing station, emergency use until one can be replaced, or used along with an external temp controller for added insurance.

Wet dry has no leak.

Back of truck had a little water but I also had water on the top trim that a leak wouldn’t create. I think my sprinklers caused this last night. I’ve used paper towels to soak any water from the bed of my truck and going to wait a few more hours to see if the water appears again. Water level in the tank hasn’t decreased. Fingers crossed.

@AZMSGT, @Peace River

I haven’t decided on using or not using the wet dry filter. Even if I don’t use it for the 120 it could be used on a QT rack system in the fish room or somewhere else. My hobby doesn’t include coral because it just doesn’t excite me. Maybe one day I’ll have some and wouldn’t use a wet dry or canister for it. I’m here for the fish.

With that said I have already tossed all the crappy, low surface area, plastic bioballs in the garbage and cut a better tighter fitting piece of light diffuser for the wet dry.

Here is my plan for the wet dry wherever it ends up being used.

I use Marinepur plates and spheres in my 120 DT now and never have nitrates. I also only have like 5lbs. of live rock in the sump so the Marinepur is very effective at completing the nitrogen cycle by turning the nitrate into nitrogen gas that exits the tank at the surface. Nitrate factory = no good, Nitrogen gas factory = Muy bueno!!

I just can’t see throwing it away. It alone new costs more than what I paid for the whole setup.

Heater fail rates are high. Most are good for a year then start to go down hill. It’s a safe practice to replace them annually. That used on who knows how much time is on it. Why risk everything on a piece that costs so little?

No more water has shown up. I’m in the process of draining the tank and will get it cleaned and put away until I’m ready to start putting things together in the fish Room.

Heater works great and looks brand new. I’ll keep it for my water mixing station.

Wet dry is in great condition and not missing any pieces. It’ll get used somewhere as a massive mechanical/biofilter.

1 pump was complete trash and seized. The other works but not reliable as it has difficulty starting up once it’s been stopped a little while. It’s going to the trash after it drains the tank.

Tank, stand, and canopy all have minor signs of wear and use but the construction is solid and it has many years left in it.

This deal was like some I’ve seen but thought I’d never be so lucky to find. Guess I was wrong!

I completely agree with it not being trustable as a heater in a display. At least not without a secondary temp controller like an ink bird or others.
Do you not agree that after being retired from a DT that a heater still has a purpose that it can serve?
These are the types of low to no risk scenarios that I see for an old heater:
Added heat to throw in the tank if the home heater is on the fritz, water mixing, fresh water dips, used temporarily while getting a replacement heater that kicked the bucket.

Great collection of fish. (I just bought a Harlequin Tusk that same size!) What type of Wrasse?—moving too fast for me see. ;)
Thanks!
It’s a pink face (Thalassoma quinquevittatum). The Harlequin Tusk is getting super thick! The ruler of the tank is the powder blue.

I think you can get away with using the heater in your mixing station like you said earlier.

I found this guy’s post. Just talked to him and offered him $500 and locked the deal (paypal’d already). Thanks for sharing! I will post detailed picks when I pick it up.
I was just thinking what a move...touché

You know, I had that happen once. Great deal, couldn't resist it. Drove 4 hours in a blinding snow storm to get to the place. The husband took me to the garage where it was stored. Apparently he and his wife had been fighting before I arrived. She walked out to the garage, the fight resumed, she threw something annnnnndd- hit the tank! Sale over
