What a genius design, way to go ecotech!

Happy I never got away from the Hydor koralia powerheads they move plenty of water and have a good guard. And they're cheap. I got some that are at least 6 years old and still run fine. Don't know how anyone can hear a powerhead that's under water? The quiet part always confuses me, I cant hear any of my powerheads unless I run them dry. Don't know how a company justifies charging as much as people are now adays. The design hasn't changed much.

I started this silly hobby years ago, I purchased the MP40 when they first came out. I agree they were noisy as heck, I recently had the chance to up grade to their new "quiet" model. I can appreciate how much quieter they are compared to the previous model.
NOT being a wise guy here ( are you running the newer model or still using the older ones )
If you knew the Jebao can move a ton of water and it's cheaper, why didn't you go with that ?

The newer version. I got it from a local hobbyist after he broke down the tank and want to see what’s all the hype about, I was wrong. I still have Jebaos running in the tank.

Technically the motor of a vortech is outside the tank so it doesn’t have water to dampen the noise. If the bearings get old.. it can certainly get noisy!

I did not know this thanks for the clarification! Now I understand why people mention the noise on newer design powerheads.

They come with foam guards for this reason. Just rinse them under warm water for a few seconds as part of your weekly maintenance. I love the slim design of them. My Sicce powerheads are great but they take up so much room in the tank.

Edit - Oh I see so it was on the outside, and making noise, and you turned it off and then it crawled inside. How exactly is any of this the fault of the pump?

This foam screens are useless. Nem guards help but you need the one that cover the front of the pump. I lost a bicolor blenny that decided to use the pump to hide in while it was off while doing maintenance on the tank. The startup jiggle didn’t scare it out and it got cut in half.

How? So due to its design with a huge opening that allowed the snail to crawled partially in by the propeller. The propeller was smacking the shell of the snail and caught my attention.

if the opening was made smaller like 99% of wavemakers out there, there’s no chance of the aforementioned incident occurre. How? You just made me laugh, no offense

The mp40s shouldn’t be loud at all. The more precisely the impeller and motor are lined up, the more quiet they will get. If your pump is noticeably louder than a standard pump, it may be that the motor was dropped at some point. That tends to knock something around you’ll need to send it in for repair/maintenance to get rid of the noise.

Jebao can be workhorses if you get one that works out of the box. The only issues I’ve had with mine were the rubber mounting pieces wearing out on some of the larger powerheads and some magnets starting to rust after about two years. The rust is definitely the bigger issue. Not sure if it was a manufacturer issue or a result of vinegar soaking when cleaning, but having a magnet slowly rust away in a reef tank isn’t my idea of a good time.

I saw someone's Snowflake Moray was chopped in half by a MP40.

My Snowflake has been pulled by the vacuum into my MP60s multiple times, as well as the XF350 Gyre pumps, but he's been able to escape.

I put the 3D printed guards and the foam covers on top of them before it was too late.

The 3D guards took some real elbow grease to snap on. It's not a slip fit, so clean your MPs real good before you put the guard on because it isn't coming off once it is.

BONUS: My tangs, Angels, Cowfish, and Blackspot Tusk pick at the foam all day. It collects a lot but they keep it fairly clean.
