Surprised that a quality skimmer hasn't been mentioned yet. One of the most useful pieces of equipment. I'll also start my list
Apex controller
ATO tied directly to RODI = never having to fill reservoirs
Reef Octopus skimmer
Separate sump (= much easier maintenance and keeps all the junk hidden)
Gyre 150 (new paradigm for generating water movement and so quiet!)
Quality test kits for PO4, CA and ALK

This was mentioned, but not in terms of being a piece of equipment: a quarantine tank. One ich battle and losing most of my fish was enough to convince me I needed one. I think far too many people either don't learn that or learn the hard way like I did.

Absolutely the best upgrade I have ever made in reefing is my AVAST Swabbie!
I've made a lot of upgrades that. Where good/great but this instantly increased my skimmer performance 10x.

You know how when you try to fine tune your skimmer just right but a gayer a while it doesn't seem like it's the same. That's because it's all different when junk starts sticking to the neck. Keep it clean and the skimmer stays at that perfect point.

Also DIY skimate locker! Prevents skimmer flooding 100% of the time.

Kessil AP700s. These are just the very best, live them so much, really great lights.

Vortech MP60, makes awesome waves! Huge undertow. Everything gets sucked/pushed around everywhere.

DC return pumps! Holy ****! These are 1,000 times better than the old styles and externals.

Brute!!!! Because everything! Also with the little cart thing attached to the bottom is a must.

Kalk Brute! And a Brute tote as my skimmer section! It's amazing!

Gel super Glue!

It is an automated liquid pump that adds a specific metered amount of whatever additive you tell it to, to your water. This will maintain constant even levels in your aquarium.

Typically a quality 2-part.

Ditto for me! The Avast Swabbie and Skimmate Locker are essentials for any tank I set up in the future.
