What are your Reefing Pet Peeves!

It's in my sig over on RC - pet peeve: anemones host clowns; clowns do not host anemones.

This annoys me to no end, especially because it is so common.
People who consistently say "anenome" or any variation of anemone.
Fish stores treating with subtherapeutic copper. I understand why they do it from a business perspective but it drives me crazy.
The highly imaginative names for certain corals that have little to do with how they look. The fact that many zoas have multiple names when they are either the same or slight variations.
Companies with ridiculous claims on their products (e.g. garlic as therapeutic , "immune boosters", reef safe ich treatments which aren't back by any research)

The people that start dumping all the “magic cure” chemicals into there tanks at the first sign of any kind problem.. makes me cringe every time.

My biggest peeve would be when you stroll into a local fish store (LFS) and see fish that you know have a really bad chance of survival in captive systems. I wish people would stop asking for those type of animals and tell the stores to quit buying them, I do every time I see something that won't make it.
Another would be the bad collection methods (Cyanide or stun guns) which usually will lead to the demise of a usually easy animal to keep.
Things like this are what give our passion a black eye with some of the population.
I like captive breeding and coral farms, they are what gives the haters something to think about. They also give us a better chance of rebuilding reefs that are withering away..

Conflicting advise, or better yet, the question as to why I’m asking something. Clearly I’m asking a question because I don’t have an answer and want someone else better qualified to give me some solid advise. I question everything I do, so I’m always searching for experts.

I also hate buying a coral only to see it wither away with no explanation, or putting a fish in my tank, only to have it disappear forever

I agree completely. Yeah, I get it that things happen, it's a part of learning about the hobby. I just wish I knew EXACTLY what happened, what caused it, how to correct it and how to prevent it from happening again.

My biggest pet peeve is people that offer advice or give recommendations to questions and they only offer it cause they read it somewhere or “heard” it before.

Be it live stock, equipment, whatever.

A very close second is people who rarely post, but when they do they are only criticizing or trashing a vendor / member.

Coral Hack Shops - you know the companies that import vast amounts of corals weekly , hack them up, and sell them cheap. A lot of them don't survive. And they are always having sales. It's all about volume turnover. They don't care about the reefer or the environmental impact

Those who ask for advice but then discount that advice because it is inconvenient.

People who claim they won't put anything in their tank if they don't know what is in it.

People who say they can't afford a $40 recommendation but spend $100's regularly replacing livestock.

People who feel that the way they have had success is the only way to have success. Every tank is different, just because something worked for you does not mean it will work for everyone. Just because it did not work for you does not mean it will not work for anyone.

Ironically, another of mine is people that overprice their used gear and then get all offended when they get 'lowball' offers. My response generally is that is was a 'fairball' offer . First rule of second hand gear is that 'sellers expect more for their used gear then they'd be willing to pay for yours'. The second rule is, figure out what percentage of the useful life remains and offer accordingly.

We're guilty of it, our 2 year old loves dory. When she can comprehend we will teach her specific names, lol. At least she knows zoas, chalice coral, etc!

These are both good ones. A lot of my peeves have to do with using correct terminology and similar bad habits. I get when someone is new and learning of course we shouldn't bash on them, that's just a teaching opportunity. But when someone has been in it for years and doesn't think it matters or doesn't care to learn it that bothers me.

Hmm... you wouldn't be implying that someone may have poor maintenance practices yet blame the manufacturer when it doesn't last as long as expected?

Every time I think I have it all figured out and then I try to up my game and realize I'm on the left side of the learning curve again. (although that applies to most parts of life I guess)
