I'm building a 40g breeder with 20g tall sump system and need ideas for an ato reservoir. I'd like something tall and narrow to fit behind the stand but the acrylic ones out there are very expensive. Does anyone have a less expensive alternative they use?

many options to be had, and been discussed on probably 50+ threads. find any container that is sturdy, preferably food grade and fits your space.

For my JBJ28, I'm using a plastic container from Walmart....I'm guessing it's for cereal or dog food or some dry food. You can get different sizes, but I think the one I've got holds two gallons. Bottom line, check out the plastic container isles in Walmart....loads of choices.

It's the big one in the front with this picture. The smaller ones behind are for alk and calc.

I actually have this one for my 12g nano.

I cut the top off of a 5G Hinckley Springs bottle so I could fit in a pump.

Almost anything will work. The thing to keep in mind is the volume it holds. ATO systems have a fair amount of safeguards, but I've seen a few threads, including on this forum, where they malfunction and empty the reservoir. There was even one recently involving a Tunze ATO.
So just use a container with a volume that if the entire amount went into your system at once, it will not overflow your system. Even if you need to refill it more frequently, it's a safer way to go.

I have that exact set up. 40b and a 20 tall sump. I use a 5gl water jug. You can see it under the doser.

That's nice!

I bought a 7.5 gallon sturdy trash can from the store and it works nicely. Easy open lid for filling and for fitting the pump into. Only problem is when people come over and think its for trash haha.

I happen to find a picture of mine on my phone. It's a custom acrylic container TruVue made me when I ordered the tank. It only holds 6.5 gallons. But since I only lose a little less than a gallon a day to evaporation, I only refill it about once a week. Does what I want though.
