Good afternoon all from late season snowy jersey. I’m debating which fish to add last to my system and I’d like a dwarf angel. 40 gallon, zoas and lps only, First fish was a royal gramma and second was a neon dottyback. The third and final fish has to be able to hold its own against the dotty but there is plenty of hiding spots. I have a couple fish in mind but I need to hear from real people not reading online fish facts. Who has kept dwarfs with coral, i know the success is low with sps but who has successfully kept dwarfs with lps and which species....and if not what fish do you think should be my last one in the tank. Thanks all

Dwarf* can’t believe I messed up the post title lol

I have several dwarf angels in my mixed reef. All Centropyge genus. But like any fish, you don't always get a model citizen.

I’m starting to think more often than not they are ok... they get a bad rap though it seems like for chomping on coral

I’m on my 2nd flame in a mixed mostly sps and no issues. Maybe just lucky but no issues so far either with nipping or fighting. Fully stocked with 9 other fish in a 75. I added the flame last only because he was a replacement for a carpet surfer flame. Keep the lid on!

How many times do you feed

Auto feeder 3 times a day dropping NLS and algae extreme mix. I also have small yellow and blue tangs too. They all seem to do well with this mix.

Here is my little guy. No issues with any coral. Have them all in mixed reef.

Angels are individuals, so none are 100% safe. That said, dwarf angels are usually pretty safe, so long as there aren't any clams involved. I've found flamebacks & argis to be the most likely to be reef-safe. They are also smaller and pretty feisty, so would probably be some of the best choices for your tank, OP.

Coral beauties, multicolors and flame angels are also usually good citizens. In my experience, lemonpeels, bicolors and nox angels are more likely than others to pick at things, but still aren't guaranteed offenders.

Agree that it's hit or miss. I've also read that one can be a model citizen for awhile and almost turn overnight into a coral feasting machine. My thinking is that it's diet related and if you give it plenty it may not find interest in something else. I'm always concerned about removing any fish since it usually means tearing the tank apart trying to catch yhem. Grrrr. So I'll keep my fingers crossed with my flame. He's been in the DT for only a few weeks so still hard to tell. The last one was in for months before the carpet surfing. Yes they do surf.

I am going to have to give the opposite opinion lol...I have tried roughly 6 different species of dwarf angels and every one of them had to be removed eventually due to them picking at (and sometimes demolishing) my LPS coral.

Have you considered that maybe your LPS are just more delicious than everyone else's? :p

I had a potters for a couple years, 2 different mixed reef tanks, LPS SPS and zoas. No issue at all. Just went MIA recently have not found the body yet, not really sure what would have happened to him. Figure he must have gotten into an overflow somehow as the tank has a canopy. Or something pulled him under a rock.

I just replaced him with a tank bred Flame angel. It's very small but I don't anticipate any issues. They say tank bred angels are the way to go for reef tank.

I think I’ve decided it’s not worth the risk, at least for me, the way my tank is it would be impossible to do a full tear down to catch one if he was cho ping on coral and I’ve read they are brutal to try and catch

I think they're hit and miss. If you want one, it'll be a matter of trying one out and seeing how he does.
What wrasse is that in your pic? Thinking I’m going to add one of the colorful fairy wrasses instead of a dwarf angel
