What exact amount should I feed my fish?

Shortly after I used frozen my goby jumped out and I tested my water conditions and it was due to me feeding too much.

I suspect the Goby didn't jump from overfeeding. Fish jump, you should get a lid if you don't have one.

i bought a DIY lid. Also, the reason I suspected overfeeding caused this is because of a video I watched on youtube

I feed a mix of frozen mysis, fish eggs, cyclops, and pacific red plankton (Rod's Food) soaked in Selcon and Vita-Chem 2-3x daily. I feed the NLS and TDO twice daily. And the corals get ReefRoids, Reef Chili, Brightwell CoralAmino, frozen mysis and baby brine soaked in selcon and vitachem (for those who eat it), and a blend of various live phytoplankton. I also periodically add various live copepods, live rotifers, and live baby brine shrimp to the tank.

I put a ton of food in my system, but also run an oversized refugium and skimmer, and perform daily maintenance (rinsing filter socks and sponges and powerhead covers) and weekly water changes. I also run UV, and periodically dose Microbacter7 and PNS sauce.

I have issues keeping my nitrates up, even with heavy stocking and feeding, and have to shut my skimmer off periodically for a few days at a time.

I thought you want nitrates as low as possible?

I want them between 5-10 in my tank. I bottomed out nitrates and ended up with a dinoflagellate bloom. Too much kills corals, too little and the zooxanthellae in the corals starves, and dinoflagellates grow everywhere in the tank instead.

Is leftovers an issue? Meaning as anyone failed victim to having their fish overeat.
I love leftovers :)

Here is a collection of thoughts.

I feed my fish several times a day, more if I am around. What the heck, confined to a prison, the least I can do is give them a banquet every day. If they aren’t frantic when I approach the aquarium, they probably can wait on another feeding.

I read some time ago that fish have a digestive system arranged so that it allows them to take in an excess amount of food and poop it out if they can’t digest it. Sounds handy.

Eaten or not, the food dumped into an aquarium gets turned into NO3 and PO4. Maybe it is more economical to feed only enough so all of it gets eaten and turned into fish flesh. I don’t worry though. In my aquarium there are billions of bacteria and all sorts of worms and life forms to eat the leftovers which is one reason why I like leftovers, feeding the true clean up crew.

Like most rules, feeding fish rules are meant to be broken.

Curious as to why pellets are bad for fish?
Pellets seem to get a bad rap.

Depends on the pellet and how they are stored/shelf life. etc. Some may be heavy on non fish fillers, high on phosphates, etc.

Look at the ingredient list, date of manufacture, potential shelf life. Good pellet food is fine. I fed my clownfish almost exclusively pelleted food for several years and they spawned regularly and are going strong at 15 years old. I've only mixed it up with wet food recently to get more mixed particles for the corals.

I exclusively feed a pelleted diet at work...brood stock trout hatchery, using Bio Oregon, owned by Skretting. Granted there are better pelleted specialty salmonid diets on the market and there are also crap salmonid diets.

I also feed my dog a pellet diet, just switched to a lamb based diet and he loves it.

Exactlty! Nothing wrong with feeding a quality pellet based diet to make sure they are receiving all the nutrition they need. TDO and NLS are both excellent foods. I recently started feeding some of the Sustainable Aquatics pelleted hatchery diet after they sent me a free baggie with a fish order, and the fish seem to really like that as well.

I know this a little off topic but someone mentioned that pellet food is bad.
So we can say that not all pellet food is bad.
Depends on ingredients and freshness of the pellets.
Pellets and flakes is what i mostly feed that is why i asked.
Thanks.

Feeding brine is like feeding popcorn to a 6 yr old. Lol.
Ya its good. Ya they like it but it lacks nutrition. Lol.
Nothing wrong with pellets or flakes imo. Not my go to but can be fed it u got nothing else or are on a budget.
D

I actually feed based on phosphate and nitrate levels. If they are low, I feed more (pellets, flake, mysis).......if they are higher, I pay more attention to what I am feeding (usually mysis only).
