What fish is your kryptonite?

Yellow Tang. I thought they were the easier tangs to keep, but have tried 3 times and failed so just decided their home is not with me. I tried a purple tang once as well and failed. I get them past the ick in qt, but haven't been able to keep them eating once in the main display.

Personally I haven’t found a single person to keep one over a few months. I’ve read they do not do well in captivity. They are absolutely beautiful tho!
Mine isn’t a juvenile but still had juvenile markings when I got him. Huge now.

I have one and now I regret it! It’s not reef save it messes with my corals on the sand bottom and is hard to capture!! It’s been in my tank for more then six months... every time I try to capture it borrows into the sand you can have it if you can help me fish it out!! It’s my last resort lol

Turn off your lights, watch where it's hiding in the sand then place a glass over it.
It worked for the last wrasse i had to capture.
Good luck, they're nice but real headache in a reef.

Hillstream loach. Tried 3 times failed all 3.

Knock on wood but only sw fish i have lost so far is a clown that jumped through the egg crate while I was sleeping.

Copper banded butterfly for me. I have never had one make it out of quarantine :(.

For those of you having difficulty with FW angelfish or cardinal tetras, buying tank-raised is key to success. I have bought 2 lots of 50 cardinals from a breeder in FL and they are doing well. Mind you, they only live 2-3 years in the best of circumstances.

Red Spot Glass Cardinaldish. I’ve tried to keep groups of these in tanks ranging from
3 gallons to 400 gallons without any success. No matter the environment, these guys always perish one by one, even when healthy and eating well. My next tank will be a 22g peninsula with this fish as the only fishy inhabitants with a focus on long term success.

I can't keep Bolivian Rams alive. I try everything freeze dried, pellets, live foods, flakes everything and they never eat.

Rams i have learned to source f1’s directly before they enter the lfs tanks. Skip the Thailand bred rams they have at most places.
I dont know if its inbreeding, in tank fighting etc but ram tanks seem to always have fw velvet. Ime if a ram gets ill before settled they dont make it. Also freshwater velvet unlike fw ich does not get cured with salt and temperature treatment.

Bolivians keep your tank at normal tropical temperatures mines at 78. Blue rams a touch higher into the 80’s.

These are hard to pair fish. If buying multiples 2 one male per 20 gallons. If theres breeding pair, they will defend 3 feet of tank from other rams. To get a pair males are picky need to buy like 1 male and 5 females will pick one lol. Not as easy to sex as blue rams but still can do visually.
My experience with them anyway.

Mandarins, I've tried three times and I've never gotten them past two weeks. I built Paul B's feeder, stocked tons of pods and nothing. I had one in qt before my wife went into labor, when I got back he was toast.

I just love their look.

Good info. I'll have to remember it if I get another ram. I've kept so many cichlids but those little buggers always give me problems lol

I'm 0 for 2 on those as well. Both mine arrived in rough shape and I couldn't get them to turn around. The 2nd one never ate for me and appeared to have an injured mouth and passed within the warranty period. I'm also 0 for 2 on Potter's Angels. Both ate like champs even while in copper but both bloated up in the abdomen and passed. I am currently trying a 3rd one of those from a different source this time because it's one of the reasons I purchased a bigger tank.

One more for Mandarin here. I had two, one small that didn't last 3 weeks with plenty of pods and the second one was big, eating pods like crazy but one day was catch by my big anemone and is gone. I may try one more time when I finish my 75g upgrade.

Sadly I just lost my second yellow tang today. Had a prazi resistant strain of black ich when I got it, finally beat it, and had it in the tank for a couple months. Ate everyday too. I think I’m taking a break from yellow tangs for a while.

One Spot Foxface. First one was lost due to me not knowing what the world I was doing with saltwater when I started. Second was eaten by my maxi mini anemone. Third was due to miscalculation on bleach dosing when treating for Dino. My favorite fish too.
