What is smothering my liverock?

These organisms are simple obligate hitchhikers and cannot be generated in any reef that didn't directly import them, and even getting some imported as invisible trace amounts is so rare I've never seen them in person. Various forms of direct kill are indicated
Inn not sure this is 100% true.

My system developed Chrysophytes prior to any livestock additions. I used brs reefsaver and acid cured pukani, and dry aragonite sand. Cycled with ace hardware ammonia and a mix of biospira and fritz9 . I got a small patch of it after I did the big water change after cycling in order to bring my nitrates from 80 to 3 ppm. Size of a legal pad paper. Once my nutrients bottomed out, and got out of wack after starting to stock, it went nuts and now covers 80% of my rock.

I’ve been riding nitrates to 5ppm and siphoning the stuff off every few weeks.

I also saw the thread in peroxide, but I have a lysmata shrimp and an LTA in DT and they are sensitives.

Any advice for treatment? I want it gone
 
Sure thing, I'm dosing 3mg of 3% daily, total tank volume is approx. 50 gallons

How long did you treat for?
 
I would pre test the test rock in some way before proceeding. You can scrape a section throughly clean with a knife tip, rinse in sw and then peroxide after for a few mins. It doesn't kill the filtration bac it's just a test of receptivity to peroxide so you have an idea how the sustain kill works out

See if that rock regrows fast or not after one area of direct kill testing.

In another bucket you can work a dilution test to see if dosing the water helps. You can totally know your cure mode before experimenting with the main tank

Plus that external pre test can't harm lysmata but for any in tank work they're a risk. We think peroxide has a roughly four hour window after dosing where it becomes degraded so to be safe I'd remove lysmata before in tank use and put them back next day for safety

Unfortunately- no way of removing the rocks. I just can’t. Any treatment will have to be in DT.

I have ongoing QT tanks where I can transfer the sensitives to for a week or so.

Figure I can move the shrimp and LTA, then dose 2-3ml/ 10g for a 260g system volume. Daily for a week. See how things react.

If I remember correctly from the peroxide thread- up to 0.4ml of 3% per gallon is safe?

Yes. My tank is 48 gallon. I dose 3ml once a day using normal brown bottle drugstore 3% hydrogen peroxide.

This isn’t a treatment, it’s a daily maintenance dose. I have been doing this I originally posted in this thread and do not intend to stop. It’s simply part of my daily routine.

Impact in lysmata shrimp or anemones? I guess you have neither since they are sensitive to peroxide.

How did you get rid of the Chrysophytes in the first place?

I did a scrub and filter, 24 hr gfo and a 50%WC and dosed nitrate to 5-7ppm throughout, took a couple weeks but it all came back just as bad.

I do have an anemone that shows no ill effect. I had the same issue, I would scrub and then they would just come back. That’s when I started dosing the peroxide... one good scrub and getting it all get filtered out and started dosing same day and it never came back. I did use a turkey baster everyday after the scrubbing for about a week while using the peroxide. I think blowing the rock clean for that initial week was important as it helped keep everything in suspension allowing the peroxide to kill it easier.

After that initial week I just kept dosing and the rock stayed cleaned and coralline started taking hold

Just be be clear. I dose 3ml total, not per gallon. Each day I measure out 3ml and dump that into my 48 gallon tank. 3ml total into the tank each day.

No gfo, I run a small amount of Rox carbon which is changed out every Sunday morning.

Let me clarify as I don’t want some one to nuke their tank.
In the beginning, like the first week or so, I would dose twice a day. A cap full each morning and a cap full each night. The cap holds 3ml. I think this was a fairly high dose. After that first week or so I decided to keep dosing as a daily maintenance... this is when I cut it to a single dose each morning and stopped the nightly dose.
My tank is 48 gallons so this comes out to a little over 1/2ml per 10 gallons per day.

For a 300 gallon tank I would dose 18ml in the morning and another 18ml at night for the first 7-10 days while turkey basting the rock each day. After that initial 7-10 days, continue either the morning or evening dose while cutting out whichever is less convenient for you.

Zoa, galaxy, bubbles etc will all fully close within seconds of dosing. Other corals polyps will fully retract. This is normal and they will start to reopen 30-60 minutes later.

Currently- all my corals are in QT. I’ve been hesitant to add to display until this issue clears up as I’m not sure ultimately how I’m going to treat. This info is very helpful in coming to a decision.
