Im finding many are affected by Winter shipping which is obviously a risk with weather and potential delays.
While it can be accomplished successfully, there are many posts since December of delays and lost shipments.

Another would be skipping the quarantine protocol all together.

What is yours ?

Not having a reliable back up life support system.

I have a generator, battery powered bubbler, foam to seal the heat in, van with an inverter. I just need to be home when the crap hits the fan and I've been away when it has.
Very good point. Often, the last thing we consider

Biggest risk? Impatience
Very true and many do not realize they are rushing or attempting to get by with bare minimums (equipment, parameters, etc)

buying live stock without doing homework first!
Often with coral , we go for the cheaper mariculture which offers a challenge. Aquaculture worth the extra money. Biggest coral mistake is Buying based on color and not knowing its requirements, Getting fooled by high end pics, know what it will look like - try to see the mother coral. Also buying coral too early and not having proper lighting.

And often happens on a sunday night when stores are closed.

Freak accidents- such as power outage, heater malfunction, glass/seal break etc.

We’ve all heard the horror stories, and all we can do is hope it never happens to us.
I've had all those mishaps during my fish keeping career.

power outage in a small apartment during winter. a broken seam/leak living in an apartment you’re renting…
In both apartments I rented with reef tanks I sent water downstairs.

The biggest risk is living under a reefer.

Don't buy in winter months, holidays, or known high heat times of years. Check forecasts before. We can't control anything else.

Marine animal (fish / coral) supply chain. This is, again in my opinion, the biggest risk and what comes to my mind when I read the title of the tread.
