What is the deal with Chalice corals?

I want to preface this post by saying that I love ALL corals. Replicating a small slice of the ocean in your home is no small feat. Corals accentuate what is amazing and special about this hobby.

However I don't understand the current trend toward chalice corals. Every online vendor has so many color morphs and varieties of chalices available and that truly speaks towards the current demand/trends.

So my question is why do YOU love chalices?!

Lol. Yes. That article just about sums up how I feel about the "chalice" trend. Of course a couple years about it was the blasto trend and before that, well, who knows...

I don't get it either lol same with zoas. Ya they're cool I guess but what you get for the money just doesn't make it worth it to me. Why are they so expensive anyway? There's things that aren't as expensive but are just as beautiful, if not more so than chalices. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a cheap skate as I've spent thousands of dollars in this hobby, but I have not 1 chalice because I just honestly don't think it's worth it. Every time I go to buy a coral, I see the tiny frags of chalices for a ridiculous amount, and then I see a rainbow Welso or some other more fleshy type piece for less money...so I dunno. It's either come out with a tiny chalice frag, or come out with a few larger, and just as beautiful pieces. It's an easy decision for me at least.

As far as easy to grow and color variations, I think they're just like zoas except slower growing. I love chalices for those reasons, however, $700 for a bugger size piece, not into that trend. But if you compare chalices to most other lps (candy canes, acans, frogspawn, etc...) they're way cooler IMO. I used to say I don't like chalices but now I love um lol. Just personal preference and phases.

Yeah, I used to not understand the appeal of chalices either, but now I'm addicted to them lol! I think in large part I like them because:
1. Insane Colors
2. Coral I get the most satisfaction from growing out (most grow pretty slow)
3. And the fact that they are often rare/expensive in itself is an appeal to me; I like to know my coral collection is unique and not easily replicated.

Exactly how I feel about zoas....talk about different morphs and varieties. If everyone liked the same thing life would be boring!

I'm a chalice freak and can't get enough of them. For me the allure is the combination of colors. My favorite has yellow and green eyes that glow under LEDs, red rims, and a blue body. No other coral really rivals that color combo in my opinion. Even rainbow acans and zoos are mostly 2 colors with a hint of others. The most popular SPS have 2 colors like SSC. SPS with more colors are "rainbows" and get higher prices anyway. Don't get me wrong, I am an SPS junkie, but my sandbed is filled with colorful disks that look like crazy colored cookies!!! Sure the names and prices are obscene, but if you wait the prices come down. I'm old enough to remember when a superman monti was $100 a half inch. Now I give it away.

I have a few of them and why I like them is because theyseem to adapt to the conditions of a SPS tank and the florescence is amazing. Theyare the brightest corals in my tank. Perhaps one of the reasons is that thecorals really glow under LEDs. When Iturn my LED blues on - the first corals to jump out are the Pink, Red, OG Mummyeye and Stunner chalices. I plan ongetting a few multicolored/rainbow soon but just waiting for the price to makesense as they are eye-popping high.

I have seen some sell for 1500-1900. They are awsome but i cannot even think about spending that much on one piece. What if it croaks yips.

I love chalices for all the different morphs. If you have a macro lens you will love chalices even more. My sanity has no price

All I gotta say is, I love me some chalices! Lol!

I have to say I agree with everyone!! The crazy colors and morphs that are out there make the challenge so much more fun when trying to attain the bright vivid colors. I also enjoy the satisfaction of buying a small frag and watching it turn into a mini colony over time.

An economy is driven on supply and demand. Chalices are the hype right now and heavily demanded. Which means the price goes up......plus they are freakin awesome. So that is why they cost so much.

Love my chalices and all the colors. From the hard to get high end expensive ones to the common cheap been around forever pieces. I too enjoy growing them from frags. It's part of the fun. Yeah it's cool to buy a colony but the challenge isn't there.

What's not to like about a coral that has insane color, doesn't require you to run 10000 watts of light, and is generally tolerant if you forget (or are too lazy) to do a water change or two. If you aren't stuck on names there are countless gorgeous pieces to choose from in every color combo you can think of.

It pretty much comes down to size and price. If I could get a chalice 5"-6" at a reasonable price like some other amazing corals I would buy them. To me, there's no "bang for your buck", value. Same with zoos. I'd rather have a bunch of no name ones over a couple "high end", zoos. But if you're ballin like that I suppose lol can't get over this sorry lol
