What is the hype about Captain America's?

This pic is after a day in my tank so they still need to adjust and color up.

Agree Sikryd. I myself have bought plenty of corals that after having received them I can only assume some fancy photoshopping occurred. I myself don't have photoshop or any fancy photo editing software. Still, I continue to try for these corals I see, because sometimes you really do get a beautiful gem that is totally worthwhile.

This is where a lot of this came from.

A buddy of mine bought $200 worth of stuff from an online vendor on here. He was TOTALLY stoked and waiting for the order to come in and called me.
He said he was getting in some Gobstoppers, pink super dupers, and a bunch of other cool named stuff that had great pictures.
I had picked up some of the same stuff. So I had to break the news to him that he was probably going to be severely disappointed.
Sure enough, he got the order in, and was soooooooooo bumbed out. He said he would have rather flushed the money than waste the space in his tank for the stuff.
So it gets kind of old when people are naming stuff after stuff that is really nice, only to make a buck off the hype of another coral that is cool. Or better yet, call a wild coral something that is similiar to a morph they have, to make the same money as the true LE with brilliant color.

I'm not saying this is what is up with the Captain America. But this is where this whole discussion stemmed from since the same guy was looking at trading for some, and I told him what I thought.
Then when I was talking to him this morning on the phone, I told him I would just post on it and see what everyone else thought.

I just wanted to put that out there, so people didn't think it was just a thread about compaining about it, but more of a thread to find out what it really looks like and what people thought since my buddy really wanted to get them but I told him it is probably something I would kalk if I didn't know better.

Yeah, I think that those are shisty practices. Like you, I see a lot of knockoffs getting sold as the real thing, and pretty much for the same price. Not cool. Also taking "great" photos of normal coral and popping a premium name on it with a premium price tag is just a crummy thing to do. But you learn who to trust and who not to. It's just an expensive lesson sometimes.

Never seen the gobstoppers in person, but everyone raves about those, so if it were the real thing, at least your friend should be happy about those.

He would have been stoked if they were, same with me. They weren't, I was actually hoping they would melt so I wouldn't have to throw them out :( lol
I kept them and the other frags. I'll end up hooking up a new guy that is getting into the hobby and give them away to him.

I'd like to post the places that do that, but I know that wouldn't be cool.

But if people ask me, I tell it like it is.

If I say something is all that, it is. If I don't say anything, then it is probably not worth the time to type it...

You need gobstoppers. They are sweet

Yeah - the true ones with lineage to Junior or whoever.

I'll hopefully be other at your place Sunday to check them out :nerd:

I'm getting ready to go see what I can bring.

I've got some gobstoppers coming, with lineage, so that should be cool. Another trade for captain america!

Too bad about the others. I saw someone local post that he got gobstoppers and his looked fake to me too, but may be the pics. I didn't want to say anything. Would be too bad about those too.

I ordered mine from WWC three weeks ago. I use TEK 6 T5 lighting too. Now color looks like Nanofins's picture and there is a baby paly came out

LOL. You must have aton of captain americas. What lighting was the frag under that you sent me. I hope I can get great grow out of it like your having.

Hey Kevin, the frag you got from me is in my main zoa/paly tank under the TEK 6.

Front to back: ATI Blue+, UVL 10K, Fiji Purple, Blue+, 10K, UVL Actinic.

Where do you think I should place mine. I have a 150w MH on a 30g. Right now I have it placed next to my NGs PDs NDs I get good growth out of all of them. Think i should just leave them ?

I think you should be fine there. They'll grow either way I think. You'll just have to experiement a little once they're settled in to get best color. The colors tend to darken/deepen under lower light, and they open a little more, but spectrum will affect looks too. What temp rating is your MH?

Chad,

I'll be getting another shipment of stuff from Zack (Nanofins) here soon. All the stuff I got from him so far is true to his pictures and I have not been disappointed. I am really looking forward to this next shipment as I got some good stuff coming.

I was one of the original guys to get a frag from WWC... personally, I really like them... they look best when they're fully matured polyps... the pic I have is from only a few weeks after moving everything from the 28g to the 110g so they lost a little color... they are also taking their time to pop up new polyps... it's been a while since I got them and I probably only have 5 polyps (2 adults and the other sub adults/babies)... the Capt America polyp I received a while back is the most expensive polyp I have bought since I started collecting z's and p's in 2005... I've seen lots and lots of morphs and this one really intrigued me so I paid the price... :)

I dont have the Captain America's but I do have Purple Deaths. I actually saw the mother colony of my frag that I got a couple months ago at the LFS today. Their looks grey and ugly as well has all the frags they have of it. The mother and the frags are in two different tanks. My colony is an awesome purple. Maybe it is just different tanks makes them look different. I just have ever seen the Captain America in person.

Right on Bob.

I wasn't busting on his pics though
I have heard good things about Zack (Nanofins) too, incase anyone was wondering.
I was just trying to find out what people thought of it since the ones I saw looked really dull and bland.
Mainly cause a couple guys asked me about it.

I have those frags ready for you too, btw.

I am running a 14k bulb

No, I think we should fight! :surrender:

I totally hear you on that. I was wondering and a little apprehensive myself when I first saw the captain on ebay. But, it looked unique enough that I decided to chance it. Can't say I've been too disappointed myself.

It's a good thread. Good discussion, and an excuse for pics!

You all talkin' about me? Oh dear. :embarrassed:

Well, bob, you've got some mighty fine stuff coming your way. Those hyperspace are up to three or four polyps now. I checked the Star Wars today and the polyps look real close to ready to frag, so we're just about there! I'm confident you'll be stoked when you get this box!
