What is the Next Big Breakthrough for Reef Keeping?

I've been keeping reef tanks on and off for the almost 30 years now. Back when the books said to use under gravel filters to keep anemones. Nowadays we have efficient LED lighting, refugiums and designer clownfish and corals.

So what is the next break through that will likely be a game changer for the hobby?

I agree with automated testing/monitoring. At least the "3 big". It could take the hobby to a different level if alk, ca, and mag were all constantly monitored. If we could get a daily read of nutrients (nitrite/nitrate/phosphate) would be pretty sweet too.

Big 3 is starting now (Trident will be out 'soon'). But for nitrate/phosphate, I would LOOVE those. But I think those kind of breakthroughs are coming soon.

Just like others said above, testing for Ca, Alk, Mag, Nitrates, and Phos in one monitoring system would be a pretty big breakthrough.

I think there’s another thing that could lead to a breakthrough, and that’s GMO’s. Being able to genetically modify an organism such as a coral would vastly improve the survivability of our tank grown corals, and maybe even one day we’ll be able to genetically alter the pigment within the zooxanthellae to our personal liking.

I think automatic testing is a big break through but I think it’ll really be a huge game changer when automated testing coupled with maintenance of those levels happens. I think this will be the next step after all these testers come out but how reliable they will be at first is a entire separate issue

We should start seeing new hybrids as well.

Interest in and understanding of the ecology of our tanks vs just the filtration and water pumping systems.

I’m on board with what others have said as far as automatic testing/better quality test kits. That tops my wish list.

I think we’ll see the aquarium controller market continue to mature as more companies enter that space. Competition will bring prices down to more reasonable levels and the technology will improve.

If this works as it seems, then this could be a game changer! Others I'm really excited about are the new auto testing/monitoring devices that are coming out soon. The Reef Kinetics Reefbot is one I'm most interested in.

Automation and aquaculture. Both are having a huge impact on reefers success and the environmental impact of the hobby.

I wish powerheads would improve. I hate seeing them in the tank especially the wires. Vortech is the easiest to clean but it would be nice to be able to direct the powerhead in different directions. Time for this patent to end or be improved.

I think the next great thing will be in pest control. Maybe figure a way to utilize ultraviolet light so that you can put your fish under to kill off parasites as opposed to weeks of QT and medication.

Maybe not a breakthrough but better supply chain tracking of livestock is something I've been thinking about.
