What is the Next Big Breakthrough for Reef Keeping?

I think the next great thing will be in pest control. Maybe figure a way to utilize ultraviolet light so that you can put your fish under to kill off parasites as opposed to weeks of QT and medication.

Reef Flux (Fluconazole) has been great for Bryopis, hair algae, even bubble algae.
 
I agree with the others on automated testing for major parameters. We're seeing systems pop up now, but I have a feeling the advancement on these types of devices will be through the roof 5 years from now. In addition to that, I wouldn't be shocked to see a full stabilization system of some sort that combines real time monitoring/testing of these parameters with a system of reactionary elements that auto-corrects your water in either direction when it strays from your predetermined levels.

Granted, controllers will have the ability to do perform tasks based on test results from the Trident and stuff like that, but I'm thinking something more precise and plug-n-play. For example, you input your total water volume and ideal parameter ranges. Then, it's constantly monitored/tested and when any of your parameters stray from your wanted range, it takes a precise auto-correction method (whether that be turning on a device, dosing an additive, etc) for the exact amount needed (based on your water volume) to bring it back into your range based on the calculations the device has established during setup. It's a bit out there, since this would mean an entire new array of additives/devices/corrective sequences with the ability to quickly shift parameters with perfect accuracy, but it would literally change modern reef-keeping as we know it.
 
Sump/manifold for return water that constantly monitored those parameters and adjusted.

Pest free corals and fish. No meds or dips needed. If there is a problem in the reef tank a genetically modified medication that won't hurt corals or inverts.
 
I would like to see advancement in parasite control as well. Maybe a medication you feed that kills parasites on the fish (like Frontline for dogs).
 
yes agree with others , auto testing or even a hand held meter that gave a reading for each of the levels.
Bye the way , I remember the good old days of undergravel filters, crushed cockleshell on the bottom and water from the tap, sometimes a fish lived for a whole month !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
 
I would like to say someone will actually design a heater with a REAL temp controller built-in, but in the last 30 years the biggest improvement has been going from hang-on heaters to submersible.
 
Just like others said above, testing for Ca, Alk, Mag, Nitrates, and Phos in one monitoring system would be a pretty big breakthrough.

I think there’s another thing that could lead to a breakthrough, and that’s GMO’s. Being able to genetically modify an organism such as a coral would vastly improve the survivability of our tank grown corals, and maybe even one day we’ll be able to genetically alter the pigment within the zooxanthellae to our personal liking.

Think about it, corals have survived millions of years through horrible conditions. Why not give them a leg up and reintroduce resilient corals back to the wild to regrow our reefs?
It would redeem the ugly stigma (which is how the ignorant public views our hobby) and people might start begging us to grow these corals.
 
Aquacultured fish, inverts, and corals are the next big thing, won't matter if you automate a system and the hippy activists have stopped aquarium fish/coral collecting. Freshwater breeds a lot of their own livestock, Im glad SW is trending that way too. The Biota Mandarin is a perfect example of a game changer

It has been out in Europe for several years now. The new owner of the company hopes to bring it to the USA soon. I have talked to him on Facebook. He will need a US partner to bring it here. Hope to meet him at MACNA this year. He is looking into attending.
 
Maybe not a breakthrough but better supply chain tracking of livestock is something I've been thinking about.
That may not be a technological breakthrough but it certainly is a breakthrough I think we can all get behind. I’ll add to it by saying more transparency and awareness at the local level. They need to know and understand that the absolute last thing we want to do is strip mine their reefs. One bucket list item of mine is to dive those reefs. I want them to be as vibrant as they were when I started this hobby!
