What is this on Moorish Idol

if really velvet I would have expected the fish to be dead now and other fish to already be showing severe symptoms. did it eat since addition?

It was eating right away.

Sorry to hear of your struggles :(

I'd need a better picture to be sure, it looks to be something secondary to velvet.

What other fish do you have?

Keeping expert level fish such as a Moorish idol is probably going to prove difficult without QT. They have about zero resistance to parasites and other ailments, they are also finicky eaters with super high metabolism.

Can you upload some pics under full white light? Does he have a dusty appearance?

There are many great resources in the "Sticky" threads atop this section of the forum in regards to QT if you are interested.

I have a:

Juvenile Queen Angel
One Spot Foxface
4- Ocellaris Clownfish
Copperband Butterfly
Pakistani Butterfly
Christmas Wrasse
Melanarus Wrasse

I can be a softie and when I was writing this thread I was getting choked up. This is one of my favorite fish.

I got him last Thursday and he was fine. It’s one of my favorites in the tank. I noticed this a day or two ago. It’s all over it’s body on both sides. Now it’s worse, swimming erratically. All of my other fish are fine. No I don’t quarantine. I don’t have the knowledge too. I’ve had this tank going since Mar 18.

I love my tank, but dang this hobby is killing me and my fish. I’m about ready to give up. Can be really upsetting at times. I’ve never had such a hard time keeping animals. I saw two Idols at a LFS that looked like this and I declined. Actually the owner said he wouldn’t sell them to me the way they looked. Now mine looks exactly the same way. I’m tired of fish dying, wasting money and time maintaining this tank.

It started swimming erratically, bumping into things, swimming to the top, up and down, upside down.

We can help you get through this. A great place to pick up a QT cheap is Craigslist. All you need is
1) empty tank(used 55 gallon)
2)Hang on back filter(used)
3) heater(used)
4)bottle of biospira (LFS or Amazon)
5)copper power copper(LFS or Amazon)
4)Hanna checker high range copper tester with 2 extra boxes of reagents (strongly recommended) (BRS or Amazon)
5) seachem Metro, Kanaplex, Furan2 or
If you can get NFG then just metro and NFG (LFS or Amazon)
6) seachem ammonia badge (LFS or Amazon)

I know there are some really discouraging times in this hobby as you are experiencing but there will be better days ahead.

I would do a FW dip to help alleviate some symptoms. I will warn you if he is really weak he may not survive it. If he is still strong it can buy you some time.

I noticed the change Thursday or Friday. All my other fish are fine. No one looks like the Moorish did. No spots, marks, lesions, abrasions. Eating and swimming fine. I just don’t understand how a fish can appear to be healthy, swimming, it was eating pellets, Nori, fresh clams and than have such a drastic downward spiral.

The LFS was probably running UV and/or running low levels of copper, which would keep symptoms at bay. Once in your tank, with no meds, parasites can proliferate quickly with nothing keeping them in check.

QT can be really cheap and easy. I don’t understand being so close minded to it while also saying to care for the fish. All you need is a cheap 10 or 20 gal tank from petco or even some buckets. Whatever will hold water. Also if your not willing to spend an hour or two reading about fish diseases and the way they’re treated I don’t think this is for you. For future reference, if you go into a fish store and see ANY fish that looks like that, you’re asking for trouble buying a fish that shares that water. If one fish in the store looks very sick, assume all the fish in the store will also be sick in due time.

Let’s try to keep it positive and not make anyone feel bad because they don’t know how to QT. There is a huge learning curve in this hobby and I’m glad the OP was able to post on here looking for help.

I agree on the LFS. I’ve seen many sick fish, even dead ones in their tanks. I’ve even pointed them out to employees.
It really is disheartening. Don't get me wrong they had some beautiful fish there. I saw a lightening maroon that was over 6 inches long, just magnificent. There were storm clowns there almost 4 inches long. But most of them had ich. The store had just got some type of wrasse, I think lyre tail somethings and about 3 of them were actively dying when I was there. I just think of the amount of fish that die vs the amount of fish that are sold and stay healthy and that saddens me. Qt and treatment should be done by default in lfs imo

Who says I’m close minded? I didn’t ask for your opinion. If you have a problem with me not quarantining don’t respond to my thread. It only takes one. I work a lot of hours. Actually I don’t need to explain myself to you. No, I didn’t buy this fish from a LFS who had sick fish in his tanks.

Guys lets keep this thread heading in the right directions. I doubt any of us didnt make a mistake or kill a fish. I run 5 QTs and take the time researchibg diseases but still sometimes some fish just wont make it. And i did have velvet slip through quarantine one time. Hers a small qt i run in a small appartment. Its hidden in a small cabinet with a small planted tank on top its only a 20 G with a simple hang on the back and a skimmer. One rock and a small cup of sand for wrasses as well as couple small pipes for hiding places and an ammonia check badge . Reading about diseases and playing fish Dr can be challenging and interesting.

Cool set up!

To be frank, keeping expert level fish without quarantine was never going to work. Sorry for your trouble, but you were playing Russian roulette and after 8 attempts there was only one possible result.

Quarantining takes a couple good days of research. The good news is that we’ve invested thousands of dollars and years of time in to working out an easy and repeatable process.

I’m sorry the first part is not what you wanted to hear, but know that I did much the same before I figured it out. I was even banned from “the other forum” for being anti quarantine. I learned the hard way and killed far too many fish before I decided to not just read what I wanted to read, and actually listened.

So I get it, I’m not passing judgment. Just stating it as I see it.

Let me know how I can help.

This. Many of those on "the other forum" are much harsher on people for not doing QT. The people on R2R are nicer, and willing to help you if help is what you seek. If a disease identification is all you wished for, that's fine. But if you do want suggestions for how to prevent this from happening again, the suggestions you get will be honest. No one is judging you, and certainly no one is making you do anything. Many of us have been in your exact predicament before, and changing our ways to the "QT life" has been a game changer. This is why we advocate it. And yes, many of us state it how we see it. I agree that it's none of anyone's business why you cannot accommodate a QT system, but if that is the case, you should only keep fish that are very resistant to parasites (not the moorish idol). Otherwise, the results you have experienced are likely to repeat.
As a similar example, if someone cannot have a display tank larger than 30 gallons due to money/space/whatever, that's totally ok. However, if said person tries to keep a powder blue tang, they will be called out on the fact that this is a bad idea.
I hope this made sense, and I hope we can help you achieve the results you desire :)

Obviously, the Moorish didn’t make it. If it was Velvet, I thought that’s a deadly disease and will wipe out a tank within 48 hrs. It’s been 5 days since I noticed the discoloration on the Idol and all my other fish are fine as usual.

Give it time. Some fish can build a resistance but now with a host so vulnerable as an idol, they will be growing exponentially. They are doing serious damage to the gills of the fish. By the time you see the spots/discoloring/swimming in to powerheads/cryptic behavior/hiding from light/foggy eyes -- the gills will likely be too far gone.

Some wrasse and gobies may remain fine through the worst of it. But they'll remain "Typhoid Mary's" until you handle it.

Velvet won't always wipe a tank if healthy fish out in 48hrs.

It also depends on what kind if fish you have. Certain fish will tolerate it more than others.

If you introduced velvet to your system with the idol, then it will show up eventually as it cycles and grows in numbers.

If your system already had velvet then the other fish you have may be somewhat resistant.

I was in your boat about 6 months ago. I learned the hard way (like you are) that quarantining is 100% necessary. Disease / parasites are rampant in the hobby and you need to be willing to invest in a QT. Good luck, man.
