What is this?

A couple of days and some coral frenzy... any more inclinations/validations what it might be now?

I'm still holding to goniopora sp. The very left polyp trying to come out seems to show "tips". Only time will tell though. Been wrong before, lol. It looks better which is good news no matter the ID. Good job man
Thanks! Stable parameters and water quality are my goals to make all inhabitants happy. Hoping for Goni.

What bothers me about the photo is the brown spot on it. I drew a circle around it. Is that a brown jelly looking stuff?? Or is it part of the skeleton?

Lastly, this being a gonipora or even a favia which it's not one, falls into the LPS category not SPS;)

I think it's algae. I squirted it and it appeared to move with the flow but not blow away. He pointed it out when he sold it to me and said the coral would probably encrust over it.

While that is true, I originally posted under the assumption (hope) that it was some sort of montipora.

Absolutely a goniopora. I bought a frag of a blue variety that came in looking bad, exactly like that, and eventually died. I’m assuming it was very poor fragging and handling before I purchased it because I have 2 colonies of goniopora that thrive in the same tank. Never buy from him again, ask for your money back, and if he doesn’t respond positively...if you’ve got a local forum or Facebook group call him out. We must hold each other accountable, I think.

Thanks, all! Really hoping it pulls through. I’ve been target feeding coral frenzy to him once a day. I noticed tonight what appeared to be old food around it’s edges and squirted it off. Just throwing it out there, if there’s anything to be learned I’d love To know.

Just an update for anyone interested... I'm sad to report, the goni is a goner. It started to have increased PE... I was target feeding daily and I even got rid of a brittle star I caught stealing food from it. It kept getting covered with what seemed to be hair algae. No visible hair algae in my tank anywhere else. This algae didn't spread to nearby rocks or anything. I tried doing a lugols dip and scrubbing the sides of the rock the frag was on. That helped but for a short period of time. I cut back on feeding in hope it would stop the algae. Algae continued to grow and polyps stopped extending. Eventually the flesh started shrinking in from the sides, polyps retracted to almost non visible especially with the covering of algae on them. I realized there was no way of scrubbing the algae off without completely destroying the flesh. I tried to blast it off and saw little pieces of the flesh go flying. I sent it over to my pico tank with a tiny hope it might sort its problems out on its own. That didn't happen.
Thanks to everyone for weighing in and trying to help!

Sorry for your loss, if the vendor was honest, he should never have sold you this goni, it's too bad we have so many dishonest vendors out there, but a few honest and really caring vendors are still out there.
