Hey guys,

I am thinking of adding some LED to my set up. What is out there that you have used and would recommend? Is there any that have just blues?

thanks,

mike

The ones off Dr. Foster and smith. Don't have them yet, but I have seen them and they are the ones that we are getting.
They are linkable and stuff as well. Nice if you have an ACIII

The answer depends on the application. If you're looking for a moonlight, then the LED(s) can be low-power. If you want to run them with the main lights, then you'll need ones that operate on higher current. Big difference between the two.

If ur looking for sup, get the current powerbrites. Thats what I use. They are great!

Hey gadgets,

Are they bright? I looked them up and it says they have (4) 1 watt leds. Are 1 watt leds bright? How big are the units? It said 12" long , but how wide and tall are they?

thanks for the help,

mike

I've used the mogul based single LED bulb from Tullio Del Aquila that is about the same as 175W MH in intensity.

It was very yellow in light and we used it with actinic support. Then you could not tell the difference between a MH and LED. I had it between 2 400W MH in our 150g tank.

I saw some at aquatictech they are reasonable priced and what I liked is that is a single strip either 2-3-4-5-6 feet, they are blue.

Do you have any pics on the tank. I was thinking about these.

They are bright, but you won't see much of them when the halides are on. Not in my experience anyway.

These have been met with a heap of criticism. About the same time that these were released, lighting vendors started selling lamp post bulbs that were identical to these units.

Additionally, I remember them being incredibly yellow (i.e. perhaps not designed for aquarium use). Long story short, it appears this was a case of someone repurposing it for the aquarium trade. Someone designing this for reefkeeping would never have chosen to use a single kind of emitter in that fashion.

That led thingy is actually a the same thing as what they are using in street lights now. I mean the exact friggin thing. Same body but modified just a little. You can probably get them for a little cheaper if you got it from somewhere that sells streetlight things. We were going to stock this until I did some research and found it was the same.

For those of you interested in DIYing LED's or just some general information behind them here is a great resource. Also if you read through the entire post of replies you will find a great DIY breaking everything down with photos.

Cheers
