What test kit for magnesium do you use?

for alk i use lamotte primarily, but also have sali and elos. mine all pretty much agree...

for calc and mag i use sali.

ELOS... but apparently they changed the kit recently to be able to read every 50ppm instead of every 100ppm and it contains a few extra steps now (not looking forward to that). Every 100ppm is plenty readability for Mg.

salifert mag is easy for me..........

its just what 2ml of aquarium water, add like 6 drops of the mag reagent, one scoop of the powder and mix for like 10 seconds or something............Then titrate and stop when it turns into a gray color.

Question:
I just got the Salifert and tested mag for the first time....it wasnt too bad but i am confused on the last part of the test....So i was bothered by the air layer in the 1 ml syringe so i removed the tip and filled the syringe with a full 1ml....then put it back on while adding the drops....then there is the whole bottom of the black bit and so i am not sure where i am suppose to be reading exactly....Basically i used up .7 for a full 1ml so does that mean on the chart i use .3 as my Mag reading? Sorry if thats confusing but its the first time and its a little tricky!! Thanks

NOPE.... The air layer is on purpose. When you fill the syringe with the last part of the reagent the air gap is normal. When I fill up the syringe until the black part reaches 1 ml you only have about .8 reagent in the syringe which is normal. DON'T take the tip off and fill up until the 1ml mark.

...except i have to change my post now. my newest sali mag kit reads 200 pts higher than my previous one. :(

so now i have an elos mag kit.

Salifert, though will be switching to Elos once it expires, unless API comes out with a test.

Ok so i ran the salifert test again and this time i had .34 left in the syringe. That is what i use on the chart right? so my mag should equal 990 right?? I think i finally got this test down....time to dose!!

Thanks for asking this as I am in the market for which mg test to get. If i counted right, i got salifert 11 and elos 10, pretty darn close. Can someone explain the testing procedure for elos the same way salifert was explained? Thanks, Dave

Salifert, but will be switching to something else once it's expired or I run out of a reagent. Just don't have much faith in Salifert any more.

Anyone can answer this for me please??

Hah, just realized I replied twice to the same thread.... At least I'm consistent in my thinking

Elos. I find it easy to use with distinct color changes. This makes it particularly easy to determine the endpoint.

Salifert for me because of local availability. They are accurate enough to tell in Mag is high, low, or just about right. If you're worried about a couple of hundred ppm, Elos may have slightly better quality control.
