What type of algae is this? Going crazy!

Been running successful nano tanks for 3 years then I moved up. I built this 93g cube from scratch as a graduation present for myself.

I used dry Caribsea south seas Rock, pink Fiji sand, 30g trigger systems sump, RLSS R6i skimmer, 2- MP 40s, waveline 6000 for return, and a jaebo 3000 pump for my reactors which are both next reef. MR1 with 1.8 cups of BRS gfo and a Next Reef SMR1 with 500ml of vertex pellets. All of this is lit by a Radion G3 pro. I'm running a herbie drain system as well although I think that doesn't matter. All together, while running I assume it's close to 100g. I have all of this set up on a reef keeper controller running the tank at 80 degrees F.

Before adding sand and rock I washed them. I didn't use muratic acid however.

I tried something different this time for cycling. I used straight ammonia. Brought it to 2ppm and then waited for things to settle. I had my skimmer running the entire time to get it broke in. I documented the entire process while testing parameters. I let it cycle for 8 weeks. At that time I had a huge diatom situation over all of my sand and rocks. So far so good.

I did a 50% water change and added my cleanup crew. I used reef cleaners and all of my nerites crawled out and died. I added new Trochus and turbos along with some scarlet reef crabs. Clean up crew is great. They got rid of all of the algae on the sandbed, only thing left was the rocks.

After two weeks, I fired up the GFO and the pellets. I followed the pellet instructions and started at half dose. Waiting a month or so to put the complete volume in.

I started the tank in May of 2014. Although it's getting better, im still battling it now. All of my coral and fish are doing great I just have this nasty algae on my rocks. It's almost like its cyano but it's not as stringy. It comes off in chunks.

Here is what I have done to try and help. I slowed down my pellet reactor. Incase it was blowing all of the effluent out too fast for my skimmer. The outlet is right by my skimmer inlet.

I moved to more frequent smaller water changes.

I started blowing it off before I siphon out my water for the changes.

I replace my GFO every month to help incase it's a phosphate problem. I'm not detecting and nitrates.

Sorry for the long post, just wanted to lay it all out there and see if anyone had some suggestions. A local friend mentioned I should look into raising my Mg to around 1700. Haven't done much research but I'm to the point where I'll try anything that won't harm any of my livestock.
 
As an update, here are my test results from today all salifert kits:

Alk - 8.6
Ca - 380
NO3 - 0.50
Mg - 750 (The test kit is expired by a couple of months and I find it hard to believe my Ca and Alk are decenet with a Mg reading so low.) I will be trying to find a new salifert kit locally soon.)
 
I am not sure what type of algae it is. Kinda looks like gha. What is your phosphate reading? And your cuc doesnt touch the stuff?
 
That could be it. Mine is not stringy, just fuzzy. Here's another picture. These were taken before the first pics I posted. I tried to blow them off the rocks while doing a water change. Some rocks have it bad, others don't

If it is indeed this type of algae , how in the heck did I get it?
 
Any hard surface can bring it in, snail shells, coral skeleton etc

even the slime coat of fish. One amazing poster captured dslr macro pics of actual individual dino cells attached to the outer skin of a fish


the only invader that can be guaranteed to be excluded with all dry rock cycling is mantids
all others get in by stocking from typical reef sources.
 
The only issue I have with that is that the algae has been in the tank since it cycled. Since I started with base rock and new sand, I see no way of contamination.

Either way, I will look up more about this Calothrix.

My initial though was that it was the effluent from the biopellets that was causing this. Since then I have turned their flow down. My next step might be plumbing my reactor into my skimmer intake if it's possible with my skimmer.
 
There's still standard contamination to consider. Airborne input via suspended floc, contamination from water input and human hands. Absolutely there are algae, cyano encountered on a daily basis from terrestrial environments that make cross contamination unavoidable. They can bloom when hydrated and do not have to be marine in origin. Ubiquitous label for a reason...So many pathways ! Hit em with good phosphate control and keep experimenting with graZers


A key insight into shocking contamination pathways is that live nitrifier bacteria, the kind we buy in bottles, comes live out of your untreated tap water. See local water reports total colony counts then multiply that times a thousand coming out of our sink
The vast majority of reefkeepers wouldn't agree live nitrifiers comes out of tap with no 3 ppm ammonia reading but just click around on google a bit to see how they feed and gain support via communal benefits with other bac


Heterotrophs and nitrifying bacteria are inextricably linked, if you have heterots, you have some nitrifiers

The very last stage output is the worst, the little black rubber gaskets around the sink output head not cleaned in decades... Easy to cycle a tank, just fill up any water source and add ammonia

Any water we use is filthy contaminated with myriad rascals. Even ro di, most reuse holding buckets and containers for this initially pure water

For sure bio pellets have associated invaders per the tank threads, but its still interesting how they get in the tank to capitalize on the effluent.


The takeaway is this

If you have input water into your tank from common reefkeeping channels you have input nitrifiers and a litany of invaders even if we didn't mean to,

I totally agree with that statement. I was only saying that I don't think it came from any livestock or other items I have added. It has to be from my water source or sand/rock since this substance has been there from when I started cycling the tank. This is just something I've never encountered before and was looking for some guidance.

I am using a 55g drum for RO/DI storage. Not sure what was in it before but I cleaned it multiple times. Water, bleach, muratic acid and more water and scrubbing. I'm wondering if that could be the cause? The water comes out of the holding tank at 0 TDS but who knows if it's leaching anything, but I would think that my cleaning protocol would have dealt with that.

There are just too many variables in this instance so I was trying to get an ID on the problem algae or fungus. Thank you everyone who has responded so far.
 
Looks like we're fighting the same stuff. I've had this stuff grow before and I also thought it was bio pellet driven, I took off my bio pellets off and they went away a few months after. But now they're back and I haven't had bio pellets on my system for about 2 years. I did notice that it comes during the fall and winter. Here's how it looks in my tank.

Mic you should just lift that bad boy out, put peroxide on the bad parts only, let sit out of water for a min, rinse well, and lemme use the after pics on some threads

One interesting point I'm seeing in this thread is possible non algal invasions thats rare to get in photographs

Sloppys tank I find no concern as its still maturing and going through communities that exploit various feeding niches for a while

I remember this pic above being I'd d as a sponge and I don't recall seeing anything like that. These are both statements to biodiversity its great.

Sloppys tank now has some primary producer association with whatever the initial invasion was (bacterial buildup associated with pellets possible) and I'd go at that with phosphate control and simple focused manual removal repeatedly
 
I would pledge an all out war.


1.Build a algae scrubber and place in your system
2.Pull some rock and start scrubbing
3.Shorten light schedule
4.Use phosphate sponge or a fast phosphate remover
 
Mic, I don't think we have the same stuff. Mine is like a really thick cyano. But all of these pics are interesting nonetheless.

I was going to dip that rock in peroxide but I didn't feel like dealing with it and threw it away last night, sorry. But feel free to use that pic.
 
I confirmed that my Mag was indeed that low. I've been using reef crystals exclusively so I'm going to test my next batch to confirm that the salt mix is low. However I still don't think that has anything to do with the algae but it could. I'm on track to getting the levels back up around 1300 by dosing BRS supplements.
 
To update this, still battling this crap. I think it's getting a little better but it's still here and I can't seem to find the cause. Been doing 20-30g water changes per week and it helps but it won't knock it out.

As a last resort, after another month or so if nothing changes, I am going to pull my pellets offline.

Is it a dino outbreak?

What are current perameters and are u still using reef crystals I've tested a lot of salts and reef crystals was one of the most inconsistent salt for me... I tested omega reef, red sea cps, reef crystals, reg io, and salinity.

If all fails switch to a better salt that will give you more accurate and consistent levels of alk, Cal, mag.

I've seen a lot of people with algea problems switch off of reef crystals, and with that being the only thing changed saw an improvement in water chemistry and a decline in nuisance algea
