What was your first coral?

From this 6yrs ago.

Today.

I have that exact coral.. And size but went in reverse.. But now is going back the good way.. LPS (except Euphyllia and Goniopora) hates my tank.

I think it was the halides. All my LPS seems to like the LEDs more.

No doubt about that! I knew sps was what I wanted to do from the get-go though.

I had a very fortunate introduction to the hobby. Was a freshwater enthusiast for a long time till I got a job at an awesome fish shop. I had no idea what I was in for lol. Six months later and so far so good. I have some great support though.

Friends like that are of infinite value in this hobby. I wish I had one when I started. I'm grateful for the ones I've picked up along the way. And try to be one for new guys (that are willing to listen) as often as I time will allow me. Looking great.. Very great for someone 6 months in!

I can see how being new to the hobby you guys might think an apatasia might be a pretty coral..lol. it makes me laugh so hard to think of your reactions after caring so much for your new coral only to find out its a pest!..HAHAA

Duncan's are some of my favorite corals and my first coral. That's a fine looking Duncan.

My first was the sun coral seen in my avatar. That might sounds nuts for a first go, but I researched the hell out of that coral before getting it and fed it every day once I had it. I had no idea there were so many beautiful corals available and thought the sun coral was the only one I would ever want. Most of the coral I'd seen in tanks were SPS, the majority of which are not to my liking; it wasn't until I discovered intensely colored LPS corals that I branched out and acquired some open brains and others.

I kept that original sun coral for a couple of years, but it eventually went downhill after a period of time where I was out of town and working a lot, followed by a couple of back to back vacations with terrible tank sitters. A few polyps hung on for dear life for some time, but without the pretty orange tissue, they were just awkward yellow mouths surrounded by algae.

I did get myself a new sun coral, which is currently in quarantine and doing well.

this is why I regretted putting mushrooms in my tank. this entire circle above was a mixed sps fringing reef at the water line years accreted to the glass, and the rascals stung it out.

was so mad! the sps had reproduced on its own to encircle the whole container and was a few different kinds mixed in, rather rare. now its pumice

Why?

because they are everywhere and take up space i could use for other corals.

I couldn't agree more, Tim. Without those guys id still have gouramis and tetras in my living room. Thank you as well.

Amazing.Would u describe u r system and lightning?

Diy leds: RB, white, some violet, a little red, blue, green. Run on storm x controller. I like a whiter light, lights ramp up/down over 100 minutes, with run time of 10 hours.
Run kalk in my ATO, no other dosing really. Try to keep alk around 8-9dkh, 420 Ca.
For LPS, I just keep in moderate flow area, maintain alk/Ca, give some light and your good.. In my experience, they haven't been to picky about nitrates and phosphate...wife loves to feed the tank.
My system is KISS, water changes, maintain big three levels, run skimmer and some carbon occasionally in media bag.. I Dont have any of the fancy, high end tech, just patience and consistency.

Mushrooms are cool too though. If you don't like them or don't want them in a spot get a scalpel and scrape them off. I've done it. May take a few attempts to get them all but its possable.
