Not really a”new” idea , but my sea swirl been in operation since 2016 non stop. I would like to see more of this type of power head pumps available with/without external water feed.

I have had my sea swirls running since 2012 with one vortech to help randomize flow. It ain't broke so why fix it.

On a larger scale, I have imagined a whole-tank flow system. This would include a flow sensor/meter that is similar to a PAR meter where the flow could be mapped throughout the tank. Additionally, this could integrate with a smart app that provides feedback, recommendations, alternative scenarios, etc.

This would be cool to see!

1. I'd like to see gyres that sweep up and down. Each side independently.

2. I want to see a powerful closed loop style wavemaker pump with dual independent outputs, that is fed via a dedicated full syphon drain coming from my overflow box and sends back water with variable pulsing or turbulent flow via dedicated return pipes.

Imagine, all the benefits of wavemakers without stuff in the tank and without drilling All you gotta do is aim the nozzles.

+1 I wish half these dosing things and crazy designer acroporas and expensive reactors didn’t exist. They just make the hobby more unobtainable. Honestly a walstad method planted aquarium is just as hard as a reef tank with nice live rock and easy corals.

If people made stuff like a wave machine that’s mechanically making staggered waves that is 1 thing but a programmable 200$ powerhead for a pico tank with a mini nuclear explosion over it just to grow funny spiky coral is just a waste. People need to learn how to put more effort into the hobby and do it with guts and experiment and learn new things not just stare at ads and stare At their 10000$ sump

george farmer (not a reefer) made a video on a really cool store called panta rhei where they make like food for fish with fw sponges and crazy stuff and it’s super naturalistic and they have a rapids biotope with plecos and it sounds like Niagara Falls inside the place and they have a tide system deep water drop off with waves a tanginyika tank with waves and a reef with waves

you dont have a saltwater tank yet so you wouldnt know, but most of our corals cannot survive if you leave them out that long, also if you make a tide (which the fancy powerheads have flows that replicate the flow profile to some extend but not the draining of a tank) when the water drains and rock and algae is exposed for over 10 minutes, you will have a putrid smell in your room, just like the gross smell at low tide.

Honestly it wouldnt be too hard to program a couple of sensors and a pump with a raspberry pi to accomplish this.

Powerheads that don't cost upwards of $200. When anyone else can make the same thing for around $50.

I have jebao, ecotech, maxspect(gyre), and now AI as pumps in my tank. The oldest and most reliable have been my $60 jebaos.

Tunze wavebox also makes the waves i think you are talking about but it is also accomplished using a larger jebao wavemaker set to the on off mode

i have had problems with the jebao pumps slowing down a lot more than my other pumps (tunze and sicce dc pumps) and the program on my controller has definitely changed over time which makes no sense, like the on off mode (W1 mode on the controller) used to be a couple seconds on and then a couple off and is now about 30 seconds on and 20 seconds off, its really weird
