What would happen to your tank if

Absolutely no way I expect anyone to carry mine on. I love it, it's a great hobby, but if my wife doesn't want it, I expect her to get rid of it as fast as possible. Hypothetically, me dying is already going to be a huge burden, why add a reef tank to that

Lol @Hemmdog yes the dairy business is huge but she only has three cows lol. Now if it was a whole dairy ahhh lol I have no idea. But I did tell my parents there are a few people more than five but less then 10 they could ask. I also am pretty close to one of my lfs and they said they would definitely make sure it was kept together and going. They even said that for example my niece or nephews wanted it but too young, they would move it and help keep it going until they were old enough to do it.

I had a plan, but unfortunately my best friend was killed in a car accident. I even had it spelled out in my will. Now, I honestly don't care what happens to it. I know my wife sees it as beautiful burden, but she would not keep it going if I was to pass on. I would tell her to post it here and on my local reef site and say highest bidder come and get it all. I am sure she wouldn't care how much she got for it, she probably thinks its only worth a $200 anyway.

If I expected anyone to keep it going I’d probably try to set up some tank servicing from a lfs so they wouldn’t have to worry about it.

I’d probably suggest they get rid of my sps and just run a fish only tank, those are pretty minimal.

I still live at home. I have a 220 my dad has a 120 and my mom has a 90 and we share a 180 fowlr. My dad has told me multiple times that when I move out I better get a big house because all this $h!+ is going with you. I do almost all the maintenance and I go a little over board with the time I spend working with the tanks which is off putting to him. I think they will keep the 90 and 180 though as I can set both them up almost maintenance free.

I’m leaving that decision to my wife. Our son has previously kept SW tanks so that is an option for her - she could either keep it and lean on him to learn how to manage it herself or she could let him take it off her hands.

If he didn’t want it I guess it would be broken down. My son and daughter would help with that as needed.

On any given day, if I were to die, my tank will be able to go about it’s normal routine for about 5 weeks. Then the food would run out, and I would mabye have a week before fish start to die. I suspect my parents would figure out what to do, but like someone said above, I would tell them to post my address and phone number up on here and have you guys get some nice stuff and continue reefing. I suspect that my cowfish (the only fish that my dad says hello to every day), would go to a close family friend and my other livestock would be given away (I have made it very clear that if this ever happens, I don’t want any of it sold, I want it given away)

So my parents asked me a rather odd and surprising question the other day. My dad who I adore and love dearly asked me, if I were to suddenly pass away what would I do with my tank. My immediate answer was well dad that’s one of my legacies and would love people to remember me by. I would give my whole tank to you because there is a part of me in it.

To my surprise my family was like oh heck no we want nothing to do with it. A few friends were like awwww yeah sorry nope, way to hard. So I’m curious as to what others have set up for their tanks if their time comes. The reason I ask is because I thought my parents would or some close friends and they were oh heck no. So would love to know what others have planned or if like me and have nothing set up as of well now.

Mine 9yo daughter has a decent grasp of my reef and it would go to her if she wanted it. She actually does my testing as Im colorblind. However I doubt her mother would want it at their house so next in line is my cousin. Alot of the corals I got from him anyway. If he doesn't want he is instructed to raffle it off with the proceeds going to my daughter.

Kidding aside, I'm sure my wife would call my brother in law who also does salt and lives down the street. He would probably sell everything off and give the money to my wife. Sad to say, but that is probably the reality of it.

Sadly I know my time is limited so I intend to start closing down now. I have four salt water tanks that I'm finding increasingly hard to keep up with. I will approach lfs's now to take my stock and work on eliminating the tanks and equipment. My biggest concern is to find a good home for my corals, fish, inverts, etc. I will keep one fresh water tank running because I NEED it to keep me happy .

The thing my friend is this, we will never know. I mean heck this could be my last day etc (really really hope it isn’t), but live every moment as your last and what you want to do that makes you happy. One will never know but you could have ten plus years 20 plus 50 plus who knows. But live it to be happy on your terms, etc. one can’t say what to do, etc but if something happens then there is plan B. I will have no control over what actually happens, but I have faith it will.
No matter where your at in the age of life, being happy (or at peace matters). I wouldn’t totally close up shop either, but the ocean and corals etc is what makes me really happy.

@ca1ore I have to admit, being able to call your ex is impressive. Yes it’s true I don’t have any if at all experience in this, but most from (friends work life etc, must people prefer to stay away from their ex lol. The fact your able to and still be friends etc speaks a lot of the kind of good person you are.

@Rick.45cal see I want to be buried at sea also (ashes thrown etc), but as much as I love the idea lol naw. I’m just gonna get filtered out by my own protein skimmer. But on the bright side lol I will get a great intern tour of my overflow pipes and protein skimmer. Just imagine all the bubbles I could cause inside there.

Huh! Lol umm first off one can not buy life insurance for another, the person has to buy their own. I can buy life insurance and leave fsmily as my beneficials, but as per my head no. Now for example some famous dancers have insured their legs or aka Freddy Mercury Insured his teeth etc. I would never do something like that, simply because I have no reason too, plus it would be kinda creepy if they did.

I haven't read through this whole thread, but you want a plan in place. NOT ONLY FOR YOUR DEATH!

Last year I was perfectly healthy on a late January Friday, Sick with the FLU on Saturday, Admitted to the Hospital on Sunday and in a coma by Monday evening. It all happened so fast, I, nor anybody thought about my eight freshwater fish tanks.

Long story short, I was in a coma for three weeks and couldn't communicate for another week. By the time I was able to communicate, four of my tanks had crashed. By the time I got home, I had lost well over 100 fish, and six tanks. Within the next month, I lost all but one.

I shut down my fishroom, cleaned tanks, admittedly shed a few tears and seriously thought about hanging up the aquarist hobby. My wife, however, encouraged me to pick it back up because I do enjoy it. However, this time as I build, I am making water changes and regular maintenance SUPER easy and ALL CARE instructions will be shared with my wife and someone locally who also has tanks with an agreement to help each other out in such an event. I am in the re-building process now, but I will not add one live creature to my tanks until such an agreement is in place.

I learned the hard way.... If you are reading this, You don't have to.
