What would you add to this tank?

How many gallons is the tank? I'd add a wrasse or two which add tons of color and they usually are out and about swimming. There are tons of size options depending on your tank size (possums and pink streak wrasses for smaller tanks, leopards/flashers for medium, and fairies for larger tanks), a foxface and a tang (there are smaller tangs depending on your tank size) and both will eat algae off your rocks, sand, and glass. I also love my green clown goby. They have tons of personality and love to hide in corals and dart out to eat during feeding time.

A 40g would be too small for a tang. But you definitely could get a clown goby, they only need like 10-15 gal. The kole or tomini need at least 75 gal. I suppose you could get away with a very small kole (like 1") in a 40g until it gets to around 3" when you'd probably have to rehome it, as they are avid swimmers and need a lot of space. The tang police might come after you, haha. You could get away with leopard and flasher wrasses in a 40. They typically need 50gal. Leopards say expert, but just find a trustworthy LFS that gets them eating and you'll be set on them with frozen mysis. Make sure to treat them with antibiotics and prazi, as they're prone to worms/internal infections. But otherwise, I think you have a decent stock for a 40g. Enjoy!

Yeah, hermits, cleaner shrimp, fire shrimp, peppermint shrimp are all good, but be warned the shrimp will steal food from your corals, so I target feed my shrimp to distract them and then feed my corals. Tuxedo urchins are good cleaners, nassarius snails are good sand cleaners, astrea snails are great glass cleaners and breed well in captivity, you could get a sand sifting star if your tank is well cycled and mature, lots of microorganisms in the sand. I have an orange tile star that cleans my rocks and glass. You just need really stable parameters for stars, as they're very sensitive to changes.

Dottys can be more aggressive than royal grammas, so they may bully other peaceful fish. My royal doesn't bother anyone.

In a 40B, you're pretty close to maxed out. However, you can probably add a royal gramma, or an orchid dottyback. Either would be fine, but the gramma is a little friendlier. Good luck!

I would steer away from reef roids and reef chili, as they spike nitrates and especially phosphates a lot, so I only feed those if I'm low on nitrates and phosphates, and I monitor closely. I carbon dose to keep both down, so I would carbon dose after feeding those to get them back down or run GFO. Otherwise, I target feed mysis shrimp, which shouldn't really increase your phosphates much, and just start off target feeding a small amount, maybe 1/4 mysis cube 1x/week to see effects. I turn off all my flow when I target feed to make sure it doesn't go to waste.

And your clean up crew and fish should eat excess food that the corals don't eat. Target feeding will defintiely increase coral growth.

Good to know. Thinking about getting some zoas but the last ones I had didn’t last more than 2 weeks because they got covered in algae and my angel decided they looked like a nice appetizer

Yeah, the angel isn't necessarily fully reef safe, so maybe make a FOWLR for the angel if you can and want to have corals that your angel likes to eat. I have a valentini puffer and longnose hawk in a FOWLR, because my puffer tried to eat one of my snails and pecked at my brain coral, and I'm pretty sure my hawk ate my cleaner shrimp, so beware of that with your hawk. Some people have no issues and others do.

You could have a onespot fox in a 75, they stay smaller than the regular foxface. You could get away with a small tomini or kole in a 75 as well.

That’s why I don’t have any cool shrimp because I didn’t want to buy a 50 dollar snack for my hawk
