Setting up an aquarium is always an exciting time! Do you have a 55g already and you are looking for aquascaping inspiration or are you looking to get a 55g? If you have one already can you give us the dimensions because there are a few different layouts.

ordered one and waiting :) (48 x 13 x 20 in) Plan to do a t5 lighting odyssea, softy tank as low tech as possible. have a nuvo 20g, made many mistakes... the biggest being stop touching it so much ! lol. looking for inspiration

The 55g is not as popular of a tank for reefing because it is long, narrow, and relatively deep so you may not find as many 55g reef tanks. I currently have (3) 55g tanks and none of them have corals.

could be why im having such a hard time finding inspiration from pics, theres not many..

The one I use for my sump. Sorry not to be rude

Hi @actik

If I could say how much a 55 is the best tank ever you would not believe me. In the late 80’s I had a 20 and a friend had a 55. I was jealous. I did a 55, then a 75 then a 90. All back then were allglass which is aqueon now I think. The 55, 75, 90 used the same stand.

I had my 90 in my office. I would actually forget I had it in my office and not touch it for weeks. I ran a small wet dry and it took care of itself.

Sorry, best pics I got, post yours and we can give some ideas.

I lost that sohal with a disease outbreak. The Vlamingi and yellow still going strong 10 years later in my 180. I think a yellow and kole would be fine for a short period of time. Just watch out for the police. Just kidding. But a good scape with room for swimming is needed. And eventually they do need to be moved to a 6” tank.

And my friend @Peace River is totally correct. The 55 is more of a transitional tank. Kinda learn to keep fish Healthy and some soft coral. A move bigger will eventually be needed depending on your stock.

The 55 is such a transitional tank I bought one never set it up and went and bought a 75 drilled that I’m currently filling as I type this. Go get a bigger tank, largest you can afford. Believe me, just getting ready to cycle this one and already thinking of a bigger one....

I can totally understand where you are all coming from, but as it sits now my situation only allows me to stick with a 55g. I am also thankful i was able to get this far seeing how i am upgrading from a 20g, my gf doesnt like the hobby and where i live makes it even more expensive....( 350$ canadian for the 55g set up ) wont even be using some of it, bleah haha. If at some point i can do half of what this guy did with his low tech 55g reef i will feel accomplished/

A 55 is better than a 20!! :). I don't have any pictures but I have seen some good looking 55 gallon setups. Just have to be creative with your aquascape to try and minimize the smaller dimensions of the tank. Good luck!

thanks :)

If you can still cancel the order I would. The 55 gallon is the worst possible tank size out there. A 40 gallon breeder is far superior. Even a 20 gallon long overall is better dimensions. They are just so narrow it makes aquascaping very hard. They're also pretty tall. I use one for a sump but really it's just a place for my return pump and some live rock. When I used it as a frag tank I found it vary annoying. I would not even consider setting it up as a reef. The design if this tank shape is just more awkward then any other commonly available size, save the 60g which is the same just taller.

Some of the larger all in one nanos would also be an option if 75g is out of the question.

My 55. And as everyone is saying, always wanting bigger, I have a 125 in the works
