The implication was maybe, ie: could be BJD, could be a sponge - could be something else entirely.

I think what @Mibu was getting at is are there are other adjacent corals that might be annoying it?

Looks like cryptic sponge which can be evasive. Using a dental pic or small crochet needle, see if you can carefully lift it off by the base of it.

If not running carbon, you should start. Chech alk, calc, mag, salinity, ph, nitrates and phosphates. If you haven't.
