How often or is there a time period I should be changing my overflow sock in my sump? Or washing it ? I have a 72 bowfront with a 950 gph sump pump for my return.

Everyone has different opinions on when to change their filter sock. There are 2 types Mesh and felt. I personally use felt. I change mine every 2 or 3 days like clockwork. But I also have about 20 of them. My Tank is a 75g display and a 20g sump/refugium. When I get about 2 weeks worth, I wash them in my front loader with a 1/2 cup of bleach with an extra rinse cycle. I do a 5-10% water change ever Saturday, so I replace the filter sock, then Monday, Wednesday/Thursday and so on.

I change it when the water starts coming out of the top. I wash it with the hose outside and every once in a while I put it in the washer. The time is different for every tank

I also have a bunch so I change every few days. And I soak in a small bucket with water and a bit of bleach. After a day or so I wash with my whites

For me it's when the water stops flowing easily through the sock.

Change just before water starts flowing over top putting all stuff it caught back into sump....when get enough of them turn inside out and wash with lil bleach then turn right side in and run through another rinse cycle let air dry and reuse

I used to change it when I do a WC every weekend, but lately I've been noticing that it's a lot dirtier so I might start replacing it 2 times a week.

that is what I do but I also will let mine run a couple weeks without any filter socks.

Stupid question but the bleach doesn't pose any adverse effects on the tank when you put it back in?

It would if it is sitting in it and not rinsed good enough, that's why I just put an extra rinse on. Let them air dry and put them back in the rotation. Been doing it for about 6 months and haven't noticed any adverse effects yet.

You can make your own filter socks. Buy the bulk material then you can custom size them to what ya need

I do every 2-3 days... I feel there's no need to let all of that stuff in the sock breakdown and add to my phosphates etc.
