Where Have The SPS Gone??

Nice pics Nick!

uchin, the coral in the picture above is the ATL Ultimate stag. Great piece but has been a slow grower for me. Starting to take off though : )

I'm a new reefer and certified sps addict. I've only been keeping tanks for 16 months, but I caught the bug.

I've spent all night looking at frag prices trying to understand why people are willing to put up $200 for microscopic chalices but are unwilling to put up $30-$40 for "rare" acro frags - at least in the for sale section of this forum. Supply and demand might be to blame. Acro colonies explode once they get to a certain size and are easy to frag while chalices are a pain to frag and seem to grow more slowly. Another problem might be the relative prices of the frags themselves. For example, people are trying to sell 1/2 frags of ORA colonies for $15-$20 per piece. In my experience, $40-$50 ORA colonies could be broken down into 6 or more of these 1/2 inch frags so buying directly from ORA makes more sense. In contrast, chalice prices are exorbitant everywhere. Good luck finding a nice chalice frag bigger than 1/2".

I recently purchased frag packs from two members, one of which was one of the ORA frag packs. I paid about $20 per frag for 10 frags. I guess I'll find out soon whether or not it was worth it. If they are small, half inch, one branch frags, it probably won't be.

You should start a thread about this... this will derail this thread so quick. When you do, I will put in my 2 cents. :)

MountainReefer,I am a big time SPS guy also but this thread wasnt started to discuss what others are willing to pay for other types of coral such as chalice's,just think about the guy that spent big bucks for a chalice and then comes in and reads your post(not good).I myself am a fan of both corals as I own mostly sps with a small mixed amount of lps.I started this thread just to bring some focus back to sps and I found out that there is a lot of people on this forum that are still really big on sps and there are some that are big on both like myself:wink:.I would be interested in seeing pics of your sps here for sure:bigsmile:.

SPS are the cream of the crop for corals hands down!!!! Nothing compare to the site of massive SPS colonies. I like a challenge and keeping a thriving SPS system is challenging especially when something goes wrong. At least in my area I noticed alot of folks get into the hobby because of SPS but not to far down the road they convert to a more simpler system such as a LPS or softie themed tank because of the challenges that a SPS system brings and not to mention SPS are not selling well ATM and folks don't want to put in the time, resources and effort to maintain a SPS system when they can get away with being less diligent with a system that don't demand as much from them and make tons of money without having to worry much about the system. I will always be an SPS fan/addict no matter how difficult it can be!!!

I agree with you on seeing nice size colonies of sps side by side just about to touch but not quite there:)

I have been noticing that a lot of vendors have been coming through with some nice SPS lately Ian with the Reef Odyssey Blue Lotus Acro,Richard with the nice Aussie's posted today and the killer blueberry fields acro, unique corals new Aussie sps shipment just posted, and Dan at wetthumbfrags with all the nice LE sps that yellow jacket acro is just insane not to mention the mother of pearl:dribble:and even Mike at sexycorals the lps king(self proclaimed):tongue:has hit the scene with his own new selection of sps and it seems that they are selling pretty quick so pretty soon this thread will have no meaning(hopefully):)

Good point. Was just noticing that as well. While chalices aren't going away anytime soon, it's nice to see some new SPS coming in. And there are some gorgeous pieces at that! I need to upgrade as I am out of room and can't jump on any of these beauties.

I would be more than happy to hold some of those beauties for ya in my tank Craig:bigsmile:

For me the sps haven't gone anywhere. I may have more acans, favias, and chalices but my tank is still sps dominant. It may seem like sps faded away for a while but I never noticed it. I sell frags on the side to keep the peace in the tank and help fund new toys and never noticed a decline in sps sales. Perhaps I am lucky or because I have really nice corals, its hard to say.

If SPS have faded away then its time fore SpS to take over again. Even with all of the nice acans and chalices out there they can't touch the high end sps.

Honestly I have had a harder time with chalice and acans than I have had with sps. :)

All I have to say is my tank info reads SPS DOMINATE! its still the best bang for your buck and you can find more and more amazing peices all the time!

Too many people keeping "weeds" like lps and zoas these days when we all know SPS are KING of the reef.:)
