Where to get 1/5 micron filter socks?

Sorry, just to be clear the "normal" socks we use in sumps are 4" x 14" right?

I've heard of dudadiesel before, and I thought his prices were high, but now that I realize I got 4"x8", his prices aren't far off.

Canyou really wash out all theffine lanthanum crystals ? I thought thessocks were one and ddone ?

Thanks for all the replies - already ordered them. How do you guys even clean the 1 micron socks... can't even turn them inside out to wash.
I got 4 of them, so lanthanum chloride will never escape out! Just waiting for Phosphate-E now.

Do the socks have a nylon cross member running across the opening? Is that why you can’t turn them inside out? I cut all the cross members out, with no issues.

Funny you should ask... Some say just regular flip and rinse is fine. I'll probably still bleach mine.

The cross member actually is where I stick the drip tube. I can flip mine inside out. I get about 12 hours before the 1 micron 4x8 sock clogs ymmv.

Dissolve Lanthanum Phosphate from Socks

Is there a chemical like hydrochloric acid that will dissolve the Lanthanum phosphate crystals from 5 micron socks so I can really clean the sock and reuse it? At $5 a pop, those filter socks aren't cheap, and I use one up every 12 hours to dose Lanthanum Chloride. Since LaPO4 or whatever the...

I've used the Cary Company, there located in Illinois for my 5 micron sock filters, they've held up with many bleach washings over the last 5 years. When I bought the 5 micron filter bags they had a 10 piece minimum purchase. It looks like they have a 25 minimum piece purchase policy now, maybe I'm wrong. Do you recall what options you used? Particularly the flange and bag options, it's a bit confusing. But it looks like a good price.


I've dripped now twice into the 5 micron sock 1 and 1.5ml of the Brightwell Aquatics
Phosphat-E, into my 250 gallon and it's worked as expected. The 1.5ml dropped me from 0.1 to 0.04 over 12 hours.

I don't know if I'll give up the gfo quite yet, as it's a set and forget thing, but lanthanum really is so much cheaper it's going to stay in my arsenal.

Yeah, I got the exact same IV dripper bag. I removed the blue part and had the tubing dripping into the filter sock.
Dumb question but if the tube was submerged underwater, would it still drip?

I cannot flip mine inside out, there is a nylon cross, or that half-circle thing connecting it together. I ran them in bleach for 2 hours (with my other socks) and then rinse and spin for 2 hours.

My filter sock also caused by skimmer to run crazy, solutions?

Finally, can someone check my math?
Today I did 500mL of RODI with 5 mL of Phosphate-E.
1ml will reduce 1ppm per 4g.
I got 200g, so
50ml will reduce 1ppm per 200g.
5ml will reduce 0.1ppm per 200g.

So total was about 500mL of liquid, IV dripper set at 50mL/hour. (Next time, should I do 2000mL of liquid and 200mL/hour, because 50mL/hour seems slow. Maybe 1 drop per 3.5 seconds. 200mL would do 1 drop per second.)

Ok so after 10 hours, I checked my Phosphate and it didn't change. 0.5 steady. (Using Salifert, will switch Hanna after it runs out.)

Should I run this 2x a week?

You can cut the nylon support that runs inside of the outer nylon ring. Doing that won't hurt a thing, it doesn't need the extra nylon for support.
I turn my socks inside out, rinse well then place them in a 5-gallon bucket with about 10 percent bleach. I keep the sock/socks soaking for at least 2 days in the bleach. Then I rinse them in tap water and let them soak for a few hours. Then I hang the socks to dry for a few days. It's nice to have a decent supply of socks to accomplish this. I've never washed my filter socks in the washing machine, I know many that do here with great results.
Sounds like you may have some kind of reside on the washed socks, I've never seen my socks do anything to my skimmer.

I do the exact same as chiefifd for washing socks, mine did kinda bubble out of control a bit twice, but it was manageable. No idea how it's related.

Use the lanthanum calculator for dosing. I used the half recommended dose and it was about right.

I may have noticed a bit of alkalinity drop, not really significant, but I've upped my sodium carbonate dosing 10ml which should have caused alkalinity to rise, but it stayed the same. Has anyone else had luck getting phosphates down once it's at or below 0.1? I've heard as you have less phosphates it's harder for the lanthanum to remove phosphates and can affect alkalinity more? It seems like it has a sort of buffer level for me with the food I feed and any calcium that it's bound to in the tank. I'm just trying to get it down a little more so I can cut back on my gfo, but really likes to stick around 0.1 and rise from there over a few weeks.
