Hey all ive been going threw that long debate on what fish to get next. I have a 75 gal tank with around a 30 gallon refugium. I've got a little algae and I'm debating on getting a tang for this reason but seeing all these white spots threads they kinda have me hesitant. The other fish I'm thinking about is a lyretail wrasse I think is what it's called, are the wrasse bad on lps corals and anemones? I only have 1 frag of zoas so not to many sps so far. Anyways back to the white spot. What causes this? Is it just the fish stressing out to much and it makes itself sick or is this something tangs commonly get? What's the easiest way to prevent it besides just qting when I get it.

White spot is a parasite (also known as ich) that any fish can get. There are just some tangs that are more frequently found to carry it and others that have no natural immunity so they often die when exposed. You are right that stress makes the condition worse. It would be helpful if you list what fish you already have so we can suggest a tankmate that won't be problematic.
 
Sorry about that didn't wanna load up the original post. Current stock is-
1 snowflake clown, 1occelaris clown
3 blue green chromis
1 pink spotted goby
1 green Mandarin
The wrasse worries me because of my Mandarin just eating pods I don't want to starve him out in the long run, my tanks been up since the first of the year, around January 5th, and on the 75 gal is to small for a tang I was told by several people on here a mimic tang, kole tang, and yellow tang would be alright. Any others would get to big to quick
 
And btw thanks for the info on ws I've kept fw tanks for a few years now, and never ran a qt so ive had a few run ins with ich, both from a goldfish in the koi pond, and a gourami in my 75 gal. Which I tore down and turned into this SW at the beginning of the year. Anyways can you protect against it with the same chemicals you would for freshwater? I have some laying around but I know with water clarifier it specifically says don't use in saltwater

As far as marine ich if you are running a fish only tank it can be handled similar to freshwater but if you keep corals and inverts any meds will kill them. The meds are different though as it is a different parasite. They shared the name ich because they look similar on the fish.

A small bristle tooth tang like the kole would do ok as long as there was not any competition as far as algea grazers
 
I've kept purple and yellow tangs in 75 gallon tanks and even Sailfin for a small amount of time until they outgrow it. They will eventually outgrow it though.

I think that's it. I'd have to go back and look at it again. I seen it last week and the colors caught my eye but kinda like ws I've read alot of bad things about mixing wrasse and corals. Is there a wrasse that might be worth a try?

As far as algae grazers were talking about a cuc right? I have like 7 blue leg hermits, and I think 8 snails still. 5 turbos, 2 star snails, and 1 conch snail. Is that to many? My snails are kinda sticking it up which is why I was debating in getting the tang. I'm glad you said the kole tang because I like more of the camouflage and random colors than 1 bright yellow one

Yea when I started I used live aquaria to kinda get a list of fish made up that I wanted, but after reading wrasse incidents kinda marked them off. I have yet to order from them mainly because I haven't needed to yet but they have some blue reef chromis I've been eyeballing since before I got the cheaper blue green chromis

It is more of other algea eating fish that can be a problem. Certain blennies can get very territorial of rocks and pick fights with other fish that try to graze. You will probably be ok with a blenny and tang in a 75 you just need to be aware of the competition.
 
Most halichoeres are safe with coral.. Inverts may be at risk but IMO I've only seen them take out some hermits and snails which honestly I see as collateral damage and completely worth it!

Fairy and flasher wrasse are harmless to all reef inhabitants other than pod sized critters

Thanks for that. My blenny doesn't seem to bother my current fish my green Mandarin will graze pods off his rock and I haven't seen him strike at the Mandarin yet. If it came to it I would probly sacrifice the pink spotted blenny and fire pistol shrimp. They drive me crazy with the digging
