Which powerhead should I buy?

+1 for Tunze. They just keep going. I have 2 6040s opposite each other, program them so that the movements are back and forth unpredictably. My fish and goniopora love it. If I put in the gyre pump, which puts out the sheet flow, the goniopora wiould shrink and hide.

My Jebao scp is little bit noisy, not sure if I need some cleaning. OW and SOW are almost dead silent and they’re good pumps and cheap.

Interesting, which ones are better/newer? Im not against jabaos as long as I can find a square trade extended warrenty

You kinda said it yourself. Look I’m a cheaper guy. When you listed some pumps as expensive. I’m like then don’t spend. I got a little hygger in my Fluval 13.5 cost more than some Jebaos but I wanted low profile. Go with Jebao. It’s 120 day return policy on Amazon for the price you could do two for what a Nero 5 costs. Why not just try it?

Plus I’ve seen Jebaos at almost every dang LFS reef store in Chicago area it wasn’t long ago all the frag tanks had EcoTech.

Here is my OW25's that I ran for a year in my 120 before replacing with the 6105's.
They worked well for 2 @ $100.
They are quiet and push alot of water, plus programable.

My reef is 60" long and I'm looking at the

Reefbreeders rpm (underpowed?)

Nero 5 (underpowered?)

Jaboa scp 120 with added 2yr warrenty (it's 11.5" long, side of my tank is exactly 11.5")

Mp40qd (expensive)
???

What do you guys recommend?

I've always used koralias but they only seem to last a couple of years before leaking voltage.

I recently bought 2 MP40's on my new 180g. I'd never got one before because of how expensive they are. At the end of the day, the other power heads are a much better value.

But now that I have the MP40's I do enjoy them a good bit. Not having a cord in the tank is a huge deal visually. And the wave maker settings are better than other settings, but I wish they were a little better.

In the end you wouldn't be disappointed with them, but I would say it's a total luxury item.

Look at Sicce, very good value, European made, reliable, small. Great value;)

I love Sicce. But for a wavemaker. Nope good circulation but they can’t build a good controller or packaged deal for their products. This guy wants a wave maker not a circulation pump or a tick poor effort to make one. Otherwise I agree entirely with this post!!!!

Although Sicce is probably the most reliable. You could use a controller with their pumps. But that’s up to experiment. They make good pumps. It’s the go to brand for cucrculation or return. But if you care about controllers this may not be the easy answer.

I would upgrade to these for your size tank.
Wow how did miss this post! I ordered one sow20 last night for barely cheaper than this! Might have to return it

Very convincing! I ordered one sow20 plus 2 yr warranty for $100. But I might return it and pick up the 2 pack of ow pumps @90's reefer posted. Gotta do some research on the difference between ow and sow

How come you replaced them?

How come you replaced them?
Im a Tunze guy. All my equipment, skimmer, carx, return pump, powerheads.
I read how they dont last and wanted to see for myself.
I found some used 6105's that I could not pass on.
The Jebao's have come along way.
The sow is an upgraded pump.
My ow's are silent and performed without any issues.
I wanted more flow and almost bought the ow40 2 pack but found 3 6105's for the same price.
Except that they are made in China I would have no problem running them in any tank.
They are backup for my 120 and 45 frag system.
I may pick up a 2 pack of the 40's just to have.

Well I ended up grabbing a jebao sow-20. That's the size jebao recommends for my size tank. The pump is silent and looks good but what heck, this thing is huge. The lowest setting seems ok but anything else seems like it'll blow the water out of the tank! And no way can I use the random flow setting (which is what I wanted to use)

Anyways it's a very nice pump but I need a smaller one!

I've always been on the fence about powerheads.. I have 4 jebao heads currently running I soak them in vinegar once a month and they WORK GREAT. They are cheap enough that if one breaks I can toss it and replace. I can't see purchasing a 250 dollar pump.

I won't soak my pumps in vinegar anymore due to the vinegar getting through the plastic and exposing the magnets.. But ya, I hear you. I was tempted to get a more expensive pump since I'm tired of replacing the cheap ones but it was too painful! Just ordered an sow15

I've never had issues with vinegar.. where you doing 100% or mixed with water ?

Always mixed just because I didn't want to use up so much vinegar (I would've been happy with 100% vinegar though). But no longer, eventually it eats through to the magnet
