Which Salt?

Personal opinion only here---as I've used IO and Reef crystals on my prior tank, and I'm currently using red sea coral pro (and will begin mixing it with regular red sea salt). I like red sea salt because it mixes much cleaner/no residue left in the bottom of the container. It also is mixed and ready to be used in 2 hours. Like others have stated, I think you can have a successful reef tank with which ever brand you choose. Just be consistent with your maintenance schedule.

1st part of your statement: How much water are you mixing at once and what pump?

2nd part of your statement: I agree!

I have several buckets and mix everything 5 gallons at a time NO residue what so ever with IO and I use a maxjiet 400 *I believe*

I mix anywhere from 5-10 gallons at a time. I use a left over powerhead (unsure of brand). Water is clear in 15 minutes or less (probably less..I just don't ever check it that soon). I didn't use IO long before I switched to RC. It may have been more residue left over with it, but I can't be certain.

I have used both IO and Red Sea Coral pro. I have had three saltwater setups in the last 20 years and seem to always come back, have better results with Red Sea. I do not have time to dose and that's what I found when I was using IO. I went out and bought a bunch of Mg,Ca, kalwasser, supplements to get were I am at with a consistent water change with Red Sea. I have read were it depends on the batch of IO how your prams will be. Is Red Sea the stuff of salts, I do not know and I am willing to try a different salt but not cheaper.

I am a big tropic marin fan. Their new salt "Bio Actif" is pretty epic

Red Sea Coral Pro, excellent in a LOT of ways!!!!!! Stable, concludes adequate amounts of trace elements! Don't take it from me, take it from someone who is unbiased.

Sorry but it's the way you posted that I will point you out...

You think it's great or IS it great? What proof do you have of this? What other documented salts have you used compared to this?

Not trying to pick on you, just saying broad statements are...broad.

I've triedBrightwell before with nothing spectacular...*no documents :( * and I've used IO with weekly water changed on a smaller tank with amazing results...

What I'm trying to say is that A LOT of reef keeping has to do with trial and error. You can use the cheapest salt, do weekly water changes and get x result, or use a super high end brand with monthly water changes and get the same exact thing...OR it's a giant mix up...It's a tough thing to decide just like lights.

____

What kind of corals do you want, how often do you want to do water changes, and are you dosing?
These should be your main thoughts on deciding on which salt.

I use Instant ocean, 15g water changes a week on a 50g tank with 2 preds, and LPS only corals.

What I'm trying to say is...don't post what salt you use and that's it...post what your tank is, how often you do water changes, how heavily is your tank stocked, do you dose etc...all these things matter.
dude relax he likes red sea and had great results so you don't have to be like give me facts and interigate him on why he likes red sea.

I think you need to relax as I stated multiple times it wasn't an attack on him...

"Not trying to pick on you"

and yet you tell me...

"dude relax"

well said!

Reef Crystals or Instant Ocean for me.;)

It is all about the parameters and what I want to achieve, Enhanced corals coloration or Accelerated corals growth
I am using Red Sea marine salts But better question is which one?
If I want to get Accelerated Corals Growth I use Red Sea Coral Pro salt - Higher Mg -1390, Ca -450 - It saves time and money on tests and supplementing
If I want to get Enhanced corals coloration I use Red Sea Salt - Low Mg - 1223, Ca 410 & Boron. High Strontium.
I am switching between the programs according to my systems needs.

I can advice you all to read this blog about Red Sea’s research into the long term physiological demands of SPS, LPS & Soft Corals in the reef aquarium.
The research has shown that enhanced coloration and accelerated growth require significantly different water conditions.

So the question is which salt has the right parameters for your needs.
Red Sea salts are just a very good, high quality and consistent products.

PS- be careful, I a Red Sea employee

Can I start with instant ocean and change salts later? Or is it pick one and stick with it for the life of the tank?
You can switch marine salts any time you want. I would choose salt with the right parameters according to my plan. this way I will save time and money on supplementing and getting the system balanced after every water change.

Red Sea coral pro little Moore expensive but worth it
But you save time and money on supplementing and getting the system balanced after every water.
Some people save few $ on marine salt but spend $$$$$ on supplements additives just to get the system balanced again.
