Hey everyone,

Designing a new build (Tank sale at Petco + Move = Bigger Tank). I am considering disguising my overflow by either adhering rock to it and maybe mounting frags, or using the spray foam to disguise it. Im planning bare bottom so maybe the overflow will look nice as is?

Im looking at drilling the tank and adding a black 12"L x 3.5"D x 5"T with Bean Animal or Herbie inside (the everlasting debate). 40Breeder btw.

Opinions on disguising it?

What would you like to see if it was yours?

Pictures if youve done it?

TYI

Following!

Not sure if this counts, but I didn't specifically disquies my overflow, other than to add a ornage monti to it, but my tank grows coralline algae like crazy, and I let it grow over the overflow tower. Over the years it grew into a thick purple sheet of coralline that looks like rock.

I could never understand those behemoth overflows that hold a ton of water and take up all that space....and with some tanks, there are two (one in each corner). I went Glass-Holes and couldn't be happier.....small and compact....so I don't need to "hide" it.

But I'm following!

I bought my tank used and the back wall is a spray foam faux rock wall. The guy did a beautiful job BUT, it harbors hair algae like nobody's business. I don't know exactly why it does, but I don't get GHA anywhere else in the tank. Just a thought.

That's interesting... did you just drill 3 holes and insert the pipes? Got a pic?

I have a Synergy Shadow that's pretty hard to see with the back of the tank painted black... But I'm going with the "eau naturelle" look to the back glass and whatever grows back there grows.

I considered the synergy but the wife isn't loving the price point... it definitely looks nice.

I wonder why that is and if anyone has experienced that. Im definitely trying to avoid that (obviously)

GSP - put a colony on it and it will cover in no time.

I'm fighting the battle with my 6 year old with the GSP. I want to give my GSP away, but he loves it, not to mention the Kenya tree, and mushrooms my wife bought. The current tank is gonna keep the softies, and the new tank is getting all my LPS, SPS, and clams

This is awesome. What lighting do you use?

The tank has been running for going on 7 years, In that time it's had a number of LED fixtures over it. Currently I'm running a trio of Gen3 Radions, but prior to that it had two 160watt Razors. I'm not sure if the lights are the main ingredient that creates this though, since I had the same type of thick growth in my previous tank, which was a 50 gallon.

All the rock from that tank made it's way into this tank - along with whatever type of Coralline Algae it had growing on it. I almost think the thick sheets of growth are mainly do to the species or type of coralline, because I've only seen it like that in a few other tanks.

The Glass-Holes kit comes with everything....drill bit, guide, bulkheads, elbows and other parts. I have the 1500 gallon kit that required two holes:

With the 1500 you have two 1 1/2 pipes coming out the back of your tank:

And the best part, the saw-toothed overflow is relatively small:

For a 40B I'd recommend the 700 kit.....only one 1 1/2" drain.

Crazy. I have LEDs but heard that may be why I have minimal growth. It grows but then goes away. I think the asterina stars are eating it. No big deal... maybe an encrusting monti is my answer ;-)

Thanks for the pictures... Is it quit?

That is some crazy coraline growth!! Mine grows pretty well, but not that thick!

I've wondered about the value of having the overflow box. If the tank is already drilled and the pipes come up from the bottom, do you really need a big box all around it? Why not just have the pipes draining and returning without the big rectangle wasting tank space? You could cover up the pipes and not waste several inches around them. Why not have a box at the top similar to a coast to coast but it still feeds the vertical pipes from regular drilled tank with the overflow box removed to give back the real estate at the bottom two thirds (or more) where it could leave room for rock or corals?

Yes, it's quiet....or should I say, mine is quiet. I will tell you that some have had issues with noise that was typically fixed by changing the return flow rate or putting enkamat in the return. Do a search on "Glass Holes Noisy" and you'll see some of these posts.

If you get a leak, from a bulkhead say, the box limits how much water can pour out. No box = whole tank drains. Same if you had to take apart your plumbing, like if a snail or some other obstruction happened in a pipe.

In this particular situation I will be drilling the rear of the tank for an "after market" internal overflow. My 20 gallon has an HOB overflow and Im tired of worrying about it. Leaning towards the ghost overflow now but still considering disguising the box.
