Who keeps anemones in a reef?

I have one in my 42 tank, but it isn't fully stocked with coral. More of a tank to store stuff that doesn't for in my 29. It has moved for the first time in over a year.

I'm going to be merging my 4 nano tanks into a 120 gallon and will have all my nice pieces of coral in there. Is it worth dropping an anemone in a reef?

It's a rose tip anemone if that makes a difference.

I have 2 in my 50g...getting ready to move them to the new 150 I just set up...
Mine move maybe once a year...just to get a new spot I guess...nothing's changed in my tank in the almost 2 years it's been set up so who knows...
I say if you like it then put it in the new tank first...let it find it's first spot then move everything else...obviously it could choose to move again, but mine seem to only move a few inches and atleast stay on the same rock structure...

That being said, I believe every reef should have an anemone. I love the symbiotic relationship between clowns and the anemone. I don't think I would ever have a reef without an anemone. I think you just need to see what you are willing to sacrifice.

That's what I really enjoy about them as well. I just have a couple rainbow chalices, and nice zoa colonies and I'm afraid of it moving on them over night... Would suck...

It's hit or miss. I know someone who recently put a small rbta in his reef and it killed $500 worth of coral right away. He ended up giving it away.....to me.

Yes, my RBTA did in fact sting a neighboring mushroom coral which necessitated relocation (of the mushroom coral).

I will never put another anemone in my reef again. I had a Red Bubble Tip and one morning I woke up, it split 4 times. 2 days later, some of those other pieces split again. I ended up with 12 in my tank. They were like a pest. The 1 was fine for over a year and then it went crazy. I has to rip apart my reef to finally get them all out.

You have to make that decision, it is always a risk.. I have some maxi minis that are killing everything in their path. They are also eating fish. I have always been a anemone person so I have always had anemones.
Bta's are a little less risky and do less damage than most other anemones. You could always try a anemone like a H. Malu that stay in the sand if you have a sandbed.

I have a gig in my tank, same as the others wouldn't be without it, but you just have to face the fact that they don't always play nice lol

Haha! Man, seems like a 50/50 deal.. My clowns are so happy with one that's the main reason I would keep it.

I have 2 nems in my 125G and plan to have one in my 29 when it gets set up. I personally don't have the high dollar corals though which could make a difference... However even if I did have the high dollar stuff, I would still have a nem.

Mine has walked, but it politely stepped around my corals when it did move and has settled in nicely.

Around her. Now on the other hand my orange torch and my 2 color frogspawn sting like a little bee. I have to be very careful with them. But I love them all so I deal with it every day. I wouldnt have it any other way. One thing I would change... to a bigger tank which is my next step.

We have our RBTA for one year now... Here is a pic with a side by side comparison to illustrate it's growth over the last 12 months. I love my RBTA because of the symbiotic relationship it has with my ocellaris clownfish. I was lucky enough to pick an ideal location for it because it has not moved from the orignal spot.

Nice I love anemones, have 4 in my 75. If your too scared about a anemone you could always get a torch.

Its a hit or miss mine has never moved but he is in a place were he can hide at night and come out during the day I think that's the biggest thing is finding a place they like

Confine it to its own rock island in your tank not touching the glass. and it should stay there away from other things if it finds a spot it likes, If it don't though its apt to release and float around. Thats what I've done with my mag. one of my rbta's sits right next to my frog spawn but i think the frog spawn pascs almost as much a punch as the nem.
