Who keeps anemones in a reef?

I keep numerous different species of anemone with fish and coral- LTAs, BTAs, a Ritteri, a Condy, several Mini Maxs, 2 Haddonis- one that's huge, Deep Water Rock nems, Flower nems and Curly Ques. I've never had an anemone go around stinging coral much less killing coral. I have had anemones move into coral territory and receive an unwelcomed response. When it happened (rarely), I moved one or the other elsewhere, no big deal. I saw one fish die after being stung by my Ritteri, but it was already weak and dying and I accidentally blew it into the nem as I moved the powerhead. After the fish died I tried to get the nem to eat it but the nem wanted nothing to do with it. In addition to clownfish, I keep several common community SW fish all of whom I've seen brush up against the nems and not even flinch. My starry blenny sleeps with his tail resting in the tentacles of the ritteri every night. If I had to guess, I'd say the Condy is most likely to cause problems but fortunately he's comfortable where he's at...so far.

I have 13 BTAs in my 155 Bow front. Most of them are your typical rose color from my original first BTA years ago, one with rose tents and a green base, and 2 green BTAs - which seem to always find a spot on the back of the rocks away from the front glass, go figure. Maybe they don't like me! Lol I do the 'rock island' in my tank and it works good for me. One pile holds my BTAs and the other pile has a bunch of shrooms, yumas, and rics. Most of them stay put, but every once in a while one will want to go for a walk up the back glass. They're easy to get off the glass so no big deal! I have never had one just 'let go' and go floating around the tank in the 6 or 7 years I've kept BTAs. I also have never had one kill any corals. Maybe I'm just lucky and they've played nice for me?!?! Just remember, one persons experience with any nem, coral, fish, etc, is just that = theirs!! Lol I usually go by the motto 'if it aint broke, don't fix it'!

I have a RBTA in my primarily sps tank. Had mine for years, isolated on an island in the sand. And yikes, it escaped the island about 6 months ago and lives within millimeters of some very pretty sps. And yes it stings them when it can. I have tried having my return blow on it for a day but it refused to let go. So I live with it as an escapee from its island and always threatening to wreak havoc. It is indeed beautiful but quite frankly scary. As much as I love it, don't think I would repeat this in an sps tank again. Oh it is red from stem to stern, a stunning red bubble--no green in this baby.

i keep 6 bta's in my 120 mixed reef the only time i have problems is when the nems crawl on a powerhead.i do keep all my nems on a rock thats not apart of my reefscape

You can't see all 13 but they're in there! :smile: You can see one peeking over the back of the rocks - there's actually another one right next to it just down from there. And of course there are a couple green ones on the back too. Looks like my red and green BTA (kinda middle right) is deflated after pooping or just refreshing it's water. Just for size reference, that rock island is about 3 feet wide - takes up the right half of my 155 bow.

I saw a very nicely patterned carpet nem at Petco tonight. Measures a good 10 inches across. I was very tempted to buy it for just under $23.00 but resisted. I Googled the nem while drooling. Decided I couldn't afford to have it kill my corals...

My girlfriend and i have 20 total Mixed with ROCK ANEMONES and RBTA's Witha a ton of zoas and stuff in one tank 60G Deep Blue 48x24x12

this is the tank like 2months ago. Its wayyy more packed now and a few more bubbles.

Nice looking and big RBTA!! Wish I could get one or two to grow that big! Mine usually split when they start getting over 8", but I do also like the fact that mine do split.

I loved my RBTA. It got huge (14") then it split. Still loved it. It split again and I had a hard time giving one of them away. Then one morning I woke up and one of them had moved during the night and killed off 200+ polyps of zoas. It was against my cabbage coral and I tried to get it to move and the next morning all that was left of it was one tentacle stuck to a powerhead. The last one is now bleached and it won't hurt my feelings at all if it dies.

I bought a green flower anemone for $9 and I like it a lot better. It has moved a total of one inch in the month I have had it and it is still really close to the sand. No more BTAs for me, ever!

Ya, sometimes we get lucky and our tanks actually cooperate with us!!

I say go for it! I put a rose in mine and two weeks later it split in two. I added a bubble and it split too. All four seem very happy and it looks good with the other corals. Gives a textured look to everything.

Added this Anemone yesterday, first one I have had , can anyone confirm if this is a Malu? And just had a few questions on care etc. I put the anemone at the bottom of the tank because I read that they like to be in the substrate so put it next to the rock like half on rock half off, it looks like it's attached to the rock and sand, it hasn't moved at all really but noticed some of the tentacles have got a lot smaller and you can only see the tips of them is this normal? Also because it hasn't moved yet does that mean it's happy ? I also have a pair of clarkii's but they haven't bothered with it yet. Is it possible to be in too much flow for the anemone? Sorry for all the questions just wondered about these few things ?

No it is extremely bleached.... It looks attached and if it is sticky you might be able to save it. If it will take food it has a chance to survive.

When bleached it is hard to tell what it is... It looks attached to the rock where a crispa would attach.. malu will almost always be in the sand. The pic in my avatar is a crispa....
