why are people saying aussie shipments are stopping??

It's in several threads in RC and completely unfounded as far as I know. Anyone?
Move the thread to a more appropriate forum if need be. Just seemed like a good spot considering most aussie stuff is LPS.

i've got a hunch that the rumours are just that; i keep seeing web sites with many colonies of aussie acans for sale. perhaps supplyhas exceeded demand and some are trying to make them seem scarcer than they really are.

pitcom...one of the first few threads in the LPS forum...that's just really crappy if they really are putting that out there to scare people. Maybe I'm way off and they are shutting it down---I just don't think so.

All i know is that everytime my LFS puts in an aussie order half the stuff doesnt come. They have a shipment coming in tommorow, the zoas/palys didnt come, no chalice, no acans. Only thing i have left to look forward to is some micros.

one thing, i imagine cities quotas go by year, and once they hit that for that type of coral the shipments will stop till the next period, or next year

from what I have been told is that they will eventually stop shipping aussie stuff. Collectors are allowed to get a certain ammount each week, month and year. The reefs over there are being depleted. They were collecting off of the east side of australia and now that has been shut down and they are collecting from another part. Im a rookie so I just go by what I hear

well....*they* were saying the same thing back in July....that aussie shipments would only be going on for a couple more weeks.

i think twon8 is right.....supply has far exceeded demand...people are just trying to milk all of these gullable hobbyists who pay extreme prices to fuel their addiction.

This is why i dont have much. I have 3 aussie trachs i paid 40 bucks a piece for, 4 heads of super green duncans (which is now 9) for 50. Reasonable prices for those so that's all i own from aussie land. I just can't justify some of the prices these websites ask for. Especially the ones who want 1-300 per poly of stuff.

From our supplier we were told that shippments were ending but that wasnt totaly true we assumed thats what he ment but turns out that just that area of collection was done he now has a new area that has cities to collect but I do think we are coming to the end for at least now but I do agree some of this stuff is outragously priced but I try to price fairly and this stuff isnt cheap all i can say is there not done quite yet and shop around theres fairly priced stuff out there just depends on what you consider fair.

I personally think it is just a rumor. But in this hobby anything can happen. I got rid of most of mine a couple weeks ago. I kept my "most prized" but got rid of 80% of them.

I was curious about this too, but more for reasons trying to find out early on if these corals from Australia were legally obtained.

I emailed some folks at the Australian government, and they sent me this link:

I take it to mean in July 2008 they will re-evaluate collection and then either continue at the current pace or reduce collection...

I was just browsing zoanuts and saw a bunch of what I'm guessing are Aussies (I'm still not clear what is an aussie and what isn't?!??) for a lot cheaper then I remember seeing them for in the past. If they keep coming down I may jump in and get a few to see if I like them.

its interesting that you mention the fact about "whats the difference?". back about 1-2 months after the first ones started appearing in canada, our LFS guy tried to get ahold some aussie acans from one of his suppliers who is a cherry picker out in LA.

this person just happens to be a certain someone at FraggleReef. well, the acans he was sent were definitely no different looking than the regular run of the mill red variety of indo-acans that had been coming in for over a year or more, but marked up about 200%. they looked nothing like what other shipment of real aussie acans have looked like.

IMO....the whole cherry picker like business out in LA is very shady IMO. they'll say anything and do anything to get the upper hand.

Ahh ok, so they DO look different then? Maybe Zoanuts just has indo-acans or something. I'm sure it is all a big scam, which is why I prefer to trade with you nice folks here.
