why do water changes?

Space to be resasigned a new destination?
Yes, we use them as RO storage, aquarium storage, saltwater mix if we need a lot of water. And I think the rats lives there too :)
(we will rebuild the whole Aquarium and reopen 2021)

This has been a fantastic thread , i will continue to read as it builds . As far as this video goes , id hate to say but , dont go after Jacks endorsement . This is what you will get https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/icp-testing.293632/
We need to embrace innovations and not stick to old habbits. Only than we can move the hobby forward
We can learn a lot from the past though.....

I have seen people/LFS do this to often. Criticising things they don't "believe" in.
Don't bash on others to get noticed, it will come back and kick you in the butt sooner or later.

Very topical BRS tv today about low maintenance tanks. Their conclusion? No waterchange didn't work for them on setting up a new tank and they are switching their new systems to awc.

There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are found in your philosophy.

So I keep doing water changes.

Let me ask a hypothetical? What do you do if you have to treat something? I know that the answer that first comes to mind is "just QT everything and keep the pests out," but most of the people who read this will not do that, so lets take that off the table. What if you get red bugs? They are easy to treat with mycelium oxime, but the regiment usually has a water change as well as changing some carbon. In this case, would you change water, or just keep on with a NWC regiment? What about Chemiclean or Levamisole? I am just curious.

I don't think anyone who goes without regular water changes sees it like a competition not to change water. If its easier to fix something with a water change then say remover, then change water instead.
If they find a treatment for AEFW that works without effecting other things than the flatworms, I would gladly change some water :)

(But there are a lot of chemicals thats being used in aquariums which I prefer not to use. IMO there is a risk something more will be affected, therefor I don't want to take that risk. But that's me)

I have used chemiclean a couple of times. In the beginning i did a wc after the use of it. The last time i used it, it was a double treatment. I dosed a normal dose and after 2 days a normal dose again, this time i did not do a wc. The same when i used mycosidol also no wc. The tank still healthy and going strong.

Did you see my thread on an in-tank treatment for AEFW... no water changes even. :) It takes a while, but it works.

I never used any threatment on my tanks.
There are other ways to remove pest. Siphoning, natural predators and having healthy corals helps a lot....
I don't user activated carbon
These are the only stuff (beside food) that get into my tank.
