Why does BRS seem to be the default site?

Going to buck the system here. I shop at @MarineDepot because of their financing options on large purchases :D

No, really I think I shop at both equally. I think that they have both added so much more to the hobby other than a great shopping experience for dry goods.

That's funny that the shipping is reversed. SA ships from the state next to me mostly so it gets here in no time. I ordered from BRS once and it took over a week, granted there was a weekend involved in there.
My BRS stuff typically always arrives before the expected delivery date and I'm in California.

I agree with others though as I'm very grateful for the information they provide. All of their hard work with product testing and informational videos is invaluable to me as a new reefer

I really like saltwater myself. I had a issue with a skimmer I got from them and they sent me a brand new one and I still have the old one as well. I have used them both and like them both but have had better luck with saltwater in general. I will probably use them both but if they both have what I need at the same price I will probably go with saltwater. The last thing I got from them was a day late shipping because they was at MACNA and because of that they gave me a $25 credit. THey have done me really well. Very happy with saltwater.

I shop at BRS because I know that they will have everything I want. And their rewards program is great. I also love their calculators and videos and use them constantly.

Agreed! That's why everything I CAN buy at BRS, I DO buy at BRS!

Funny you say that! I'm not trying to be antagonistic but aside from the videos, those are the exact reasons why I'm shopping at BRS less and less. They don't have a huge variety of inventory only the classics and flavor of the month, and their reward program fell behind the pack quickly. SWA gives significantly more, and their shipping is still free. Not to mention SWA gives free 2 day shipping if you spend as little as $50 -- BRS gives "priority" shipping at $200, and their priority is slower than the snail mail from both Marine Depot, and SWA.

As much as I love BRS (and I do, for a LOT of reasons), everything that is being said in this thread is done as well, or better, by ALL of their competitors.

That said i'm not bashing BRS at all, I love what they do. And it's not possible for every shop to have every single brand or item possible, you can fault nobody for that! But what I AM saying, is that the other shops have had to step up their game BECAUSE of BRS. And they are all now competitive in their own way, by exclusively deciding to carry the stuff BRS doesn't (because they can't directly compare to BRS), or by stepping up their rewards programs (whch they didn't have before BRS).

So BRS changed the game, so much so every other big company had to catch up. Not a bad thing, just food for thought for the times BRS doesn't have what you want (And again, as much as I love brs, they rarely have the things I need).

Things I want that BRS never has

- Good sized frag Plugs/Tiles -- I need 2, 3, 4" discs and tiles constantly, i need 1" square plugs with the pegs. BRS never has these in the size I need or want, I need to go to specialty shop or ask vendors who have them custom made to sell them to me. You'd never think frag plugs are such a PITA to get... They are.

- AquaMaxx gear -- I love AquaMaxx stuff. Bang for the buck workhorse gear. They seem to be only a MD brand as time has gone on. They even share a booth with MarineDepot at RAP.j

- Most brands -- BRS focuses on a select few brands that are either Flavor of the Month, or classics, or what I would call "must have" inventory. No company can survive without the must have inventory (EcoTech, AI, Kessil, etc etc) it's the odds and ends I can't get anywhere else.

- Medicines -- It's funny, as much as BRS stresses QT and medications, they offer no medicines at all, and probably what I would consider the least effective dips.

And that's just scratching the surface. You can't be deep in this hobby and only shop at one site, it just doesn't work that way. As big as BRS, MD, SWA are, none of them are "The Walmart of LFS" yet. Waaaaay too much out there for them all to cover.

And again -- I love brs! Just being honest, because all that said, I can still get at least 75% of what I need from BRS. It says a lot when (IMO) an entire company can be created and sustained based on the crumbs BRS doesn't have in stock. And those other shops are nothing to laugh at either!

I have to agree with Greybear, I shop Mostly at BRS due to their service and help their youttube channel has given me, i honestly look forward to all of them. that said something are out of whack on pricing, most seem to be in the plumbing area, i used pvcfittingonline and spent a fraction on what BRS would have sold. all things equal though i support BRS, followed closely by marine depot. i use saltwater on occasion, nothing against them just started with brs and MD

Price is not the only factor is selecting a vendor.

Customer service, speed and efficiency of delivery, a wide range of quality products...

You can be fairly certain, when you need something for your reef system, BRS will have it. Might not be the lowest price, but you can be fairly certain it's going to be in stock, and that they'll ship it out fairly quickly.

Add in the amount of hours they spend generating and sharing information on this hobby of ours... well, they're my default site.

That said... I do price check BRS. On most stuff, they're close enough that I'm willing to pay a bit more... but NOT ON EVERYTHING!

A surface mount clamp for 1" PVC... $5.99? Really? Oatey sells something that works fine, 50 of them for $10.

Ratcheting Hose Clamps... $1.49 each? BRS, you should be ashamed. Buy the variety pack, 52 clamps in various sizes, $15.

I'm not sure why they seem to want to drag us over the coals for little stuff like this, but they do.

I started off with Marine Depot years ago. I purchase from the still today. Sometimes they don’t carry what I want and I get from BRS. Both have excellent customer service and good rewards programs.

They were maybe still are one of the few sites that would ship to Canada.

That is the reason I used to order from them.

Now with the lower exchange rate its not worth it but they were always top notch service.

Now I buy local mostly or back east or on Amazon.

I shop at BRS, MD, SA and Amazon. All reputable companies with solid customer service. Whoever has the product I need at the best price amongst those 4 retailers dictates where my $$$ goes for that specific purchase.

BRS is in a neighboring state for me. This almost ALWAYS means that I get my stuff the next day without paying more for it. Their contributions to the community are second to none (I am glad to see Ryan learned to be more engaging in the videos as they have evolved over the years :) ). CUstomer service from BRS is top-notch! Anytime I've called, they've answered my question thoroughly and promptly. It doesnt hurt that the guys on the phones are Minnesotans, which means I can understand them when speaking. They've even gone as far as to email Neptune for me when I had a defective module and got them to pay for shipping in both directions for the warranty work that was needed! Based on service alone, BRA will ALWAYS get my equipment and hard goods money! I only wish they'd fire up a live operation as well.

I like BRS but I mostly buy from SaltwaterAquarium.com. They have a good selection at a good price. When I order something it's always shipped the same day and I usually have it within 2 to 3 days.

I use BRS and premium aquatics. I often get premium aquatics orders the next day as I am in a 1 day UPS delivery zone from them. Both excellent.

They have a knowledgeable staff and take the time to educate the consumer and assure they know what they are buying and why. Additionally, they have the most comprehensive video library on how-to, when to and one of the first to introduce new innovation.
Also, they have many giveaways to the public, free gifts, group buy discounts and clearance items at a very fair price.
Lastly- They are an R2R Sponsor!

We are lucky to have many good suppliers available. I also don't get the overwhelming number of references to BRS, although I think they are a great supplier and a valuable resource. I do believe that this is the reason for their success and popularity.

Premium Aquatics is my go-to source, but BRS, AquaCave, Marine Depot, and SA.com all provide great products and excellent service.

Agreed. Been in and out of the hobby over the past 15 years and when I came back last year finding BRS was awesome. Never had a bad experience with any of my purchases. Also fast shipping.

The main reason people shop BRS. Name recognition. They have done a lot to get their name out there in a lot of different ways and continue to do so.

This is my reason!!

I sent a complaint to BRS about a noise concern with my recent Somatic skimmer purchase and I heard back within hours that same day with offer for a return shipping label to have it tested by their team and that was ON A SUNDAY !

That alone has secured me as a lifetime customer. they have fantastic customer service. and they have also done other things as well. they are top notch.
