Why does rock look like this and fix?

I’m a bit perplexed here. How does a tank “look” like it needs iodine?

99% of reefers don’t even test for iodine.

I would never recommend adding anything unless you have tested and know you need it.

I'm curious what a low iodine level looks like also.

Is your tank a reefer 525xl?

Nope just a regular tank. If it’s not 108 then it’s 110 or 112 ‍ It’s been in my basement since i was 9 so about 11 years now

Yeah honestly your rock looks like that because it’s live rock. Live rock is never going to be bleach white for long once light hits it. It will typically go from white, to tan, to brown, develop green patches, then start developing a whole array of purples, reds, yellows, greens, and grays over the coming years. Color on rocks isn’t a bad thing. Btw, nothing you do with your parameters will allow you to comfortably bypass the new tank algae phases. If you put too much effort into algae control early on you will be stunting bacterial growth, sponge growth, pod development, and worst of all stunt coral growth. Just maintain a regular water change schedule, use Rodi, lots of flow and keep nutrient levels in an acceptable range. You’ll become best friends with urchins and turbo snails early on. After a year or so if you maintain those efforts you’ll be free of any nuisance algae

+1 on testing for stuff before adding. I have added iodine for the molting shrimps and emerald crabs when I had a bunch but we're talking like twice in a years time and mostly when I was very new--in the first 6 months. Haven't added any in at least 6 months and everything still molts. Plus there are no crabs left..

Agree. Even semi regular water changes should be just fine for iodine. And if you have any shrimp or crabs, if they are molting then iodine is just fine
