Why things get ruined in reef keeping...

I would completely agree. I have had FW tanks for 40 years, but am new to reef keeping. Despite having a 75G Oscar tank, I have never ventured beyond a simple HOB setup. For reef tanks, the only differences are:
  1. RO/Di water instead of treated tap water
  2. HOB protein skimmer instead of regular filter
  3. Weekly calcium supplements for my corals
  4. Keeping track of additional water parameters such as alkalinity and calcium.

Otherwise, mot much else. It has worked well for me so far.

A great post that should be applied to our lives and not just our tanks.

There certainly is a lot of money being made.

I had a tank disaster due to hardware failure several years ago that broke my heart and I left the hobby. We did not have the access to replacing what was lost as we do now due to dealing with local stores that rarely carried anything of interest. I am not talking about fish. When they did I snapped them up and when the disaster hit I couldn't just rebuild as you can today.

I had been in Salt Water since the early 70's. I have been researching the hobby for about 2 years and am going to start again in the late fall. I have regretted stopping ever since. Great piece of advice just to pick back up and keep going in life or fish tanks :)
