Why?!?!! :(

To catch a brittle star:
Get a big chunk of shrimp.
Thaw it out if it was frozen.
Make sure there's no shell on it.
Now don't freak out. Put the shrimp on a skewer and put it down near it's hiding hole. Touch it's arms if you can.
When it starts eating it (it's main body will go over the shrimp) grab it with your fingers, preferably the main body.
Dump it wherever you can. Bucket, sump, toilet....

Have you thoroughly checked any overflows you might have? I once found a Clarkii clown in an overflow in a tank that came with a house I bought. From what I could tell, he had been there for months or even years!

My Fancy Brittle Star is huge! Living harmoniously in my 40B. To keep him happy, loving and kind I've taken to target feeding him Reef Frenzy chunks 2-3x a week.

I have a large black brittle star in my 65 gallon tank that hides under a rock like your star. Not to sound harsh but did you ever think about feeding him? They are rather quite friendly when offered a small chuck of scallop, shrimp or fish that you get from the supermarket fish department. Feed 2 to 3 times per week with something like Kents tube feeder which has a spike at the end. After doing this awhile he will become one of your favorite fish as he come rushing from under the rock to grab the food and can be trained to even eat out of your hand with patience. If well fed he won't bother anything in your tank except easy pickings like uneaten food that drifts by his rock.

I feed it every once in awhile. Another type of fish I want are small gobies and I M afraid even it is well fed, he would still try to eat them

Sorry for your loss. My freshwater Jewel Cichlid died on me too, and I think it's my fault. He was a good friend.
I feel you bro. :(
