How vulnerable are coral reefs to climate change due to higher ocean temperatures?

I posted the link, but I say no they will not. :)

Im not the most read person on this topic but I would like to say:

I don't think they will disappear. I think they will evolve. I believe in survival of the fittest. Some corals will die off and others with evolve to cope with the new environment. Thats the nature of the world we live in. Its the way its always been and imo the way it will always be, long after humans are gone!

revhtree: Thanks for sharing all this info with us. I enjoy learning!

Yes BUT, we are changing systems to rapidly. We are causing so many failures in every ecological system in the ocean. Predator/Prey, water quality. Things like this drastically effect coral reefs.

To talk about survival of the fittest, many reefs in the caribbean are phase shifting to algae domination. Once disturbed, the coral aren't as resilient as they once were due to these changes. So there finding that the reefs are completely taken over by upright macro algae. Imagine your fish tank being over run by macroalgae and all your corals dieing.

To add macro algae facilitates coral disease and does not allow coral recruitment. So yes they could very well disappear, or at least be completely altered.

people look WAY to short term. The earth naturally warms and cools. the reefs have def died off before, guess what, they come back. IMO it really comes down to HUMANS. whatever is best for us is all that matters. whenever we go extinct biodiversity will return.

Another note we add species to the "endangered species" list and protect them. If you are a subscriber to Evolution then protecting the species that cannot adapt only propagate a weakening of the population overall by not allowing the better stronger species to continue on.

I would say no! I feel that all of this talk about global warming is a bunch of crap... Look at the chart below, its from the National Climate Data Center. You will see that the temps were just as hot in the 30's and 40's as they are now. Like always, history is repeating itself.

Back at the end of October, we gave you all a preview of what how the U.S. average annual temperature was shaping up for 2009. At the time we postulated that we were headed for another pretty normal temperature year (on the heels of 2008’s pretty normal temperatures). Now, after the 3rd warmest November on record was followed by the 14th coldest December, the final numbers for 2009 are in and we were pretty much right on the button.
The annual average temperature for the U.S. in 2009 was 53.13°F, just a smidgen above the long-term (1901-2000) average. This now marks two years in a row in which the U.S. annual average temperature has returned back to normal after its recent 10-yr stint in the much above normal category.
Now we await 2010.
It shouldn’t take too much longer before we can come to the determination that the 1998-2007 warm period was more a part of natural variability than a sign of anthropogenic climate change.

am07f: Very good points but I will reply. Once upon a time there were no coral reefs. If they completely die out during the next few hundred years, its not over. The few hundred years it took for us to kill them is nothing in terms of evolution. It may take another 100 million years for them to evolve and grow out again but its more than possible, it happened before! One thing is for sure tho, if we kill them completely off, they will never be the exact same as they are now. That makes me sad because I like the way they are right now and I don't have 100 million years to wait for them to evolve again! lol!

I hope my comments did not offend those with religious beliefs. I aspire to always be respectful!

Only 6% of Indonesia's Reefs are still considered "pristene". Papua New Guinea is the last holdout but it's getting exposed and more and more illegal fishing is happening there every year.

Global temps are just a piece of the problem. Over fishing, sewage, oil spills, trash, etc, etc, etc are all things that our sensitive reefs stand little chance in the fight.

It's all a very sad prospect....people need to stop breeding.

IMO Rainforests will go extinct before coral reefs go extinct. And if that happens there will be a lot more to worry about then our reef tanks.

Correction, stupid people need to stop breeding. You know who you are!(not anybody on R2R)

The main problem with the reefs and Climate Change is the CAUSE of the Warming is increase CO2 if you increase CO2 in the AIR then it will dissolve into the OCEAN quickly turning to CARBONIC ACID this increased acidity then will inhibit Stony corals (corals that actually make the reef) form forming their skeletons. I think ~ pH 7.5 give or take a point is where the equilibrium shifts favoring the dissolution of Calicium-Carbonate back to Calcium and well, carbonate.

BTW Global Warming is TRUE the debate is whether or not HUMANS contribute that significantly to it. If another ******* tells me that its cold out and were having the worst winters ever how can there be global warming try this quick test. Take an ice cube out of your fridge and blow on it. What happens?? The air around the ice cube becomes cooler because the ice is transitioning from a solid state to a gaseous state and disappearing. No ice = larger oceans. The worst part about it is the COLOR of ice vs. the OCEAN. Ice is White is is the most reflective substance on earth and Reflects A LOT of heat from the sun. Water is nearly Black which absorbs A LOT of heat from the sun.

Human may not be the major source IMO we are a thorn in the side of the fact that there are 30,000 active volcanoes in the ocean releasing TONS upon TONS and TONS of CO2 every day

But to make you feel better Rev I did watch a program the other day about something to do with eathrquakes (I may be wrong I watch too many of these things) and it showed the most beutiful reef I have ever seen and it was just found! I think its like 1000 miles from any body of land it had ( I kid you NOT) 20-30 giant clams/sq yard it was AWESOME. And it may be worth mentioning Coral Reefs HAVE survived longer than any other multicellular living organism. They made it through ice age after ice age and that hasd even helped create the diversity of the reefs due to the shifting currents in the ocean from the rasing and lowering of the seas. Shifting currents send eggs and sperm to other locations popping up new baby reefs. Also although Stony corals may die out Softies will still make it and I Guarantee that after a few more million years the stonies will evolve again and come back
