Hello Reefers!

We know ammonia cleaners are not aloud near our tanks. Windex came out with ammonia free cleaner ways back. I tried it on things around the house. It does not work.

So now they have vinegar in it. It’s ammonia free. Is this safe to use around the tank or even on the tank? I know it has smells in it so probably not.

What are your thoughts?

Does it foam when you shake it? If it does, then there's probably surfactants in it.

I will say that I've used this exact product in a rag, sprayed on the rag away from the tank in a different room. I found that it works much better at cleaning other surfaces rather than glass...like counter tops etc.

I would guess anything that says keep out of reach of children and pets should be used with caution.

I use this stuff on most any glass or other surfaces not wood. It is amazing, streak free. Just a bit pricey

Same here with using Windex, or whatever glass cleaner the wife buys. I’ve been doing this since literally the 1970’s without an issue.

I do like to make sure that no indirect spray is getting in the water. With small tanks I usually spray onto the paper towel, then wipe it on. With larger tanks I’ll spray along the bottom half of the glass and wipe it upwards.

Very interesting to see so many people using reg Windex near or on there tanks.

I have always read this is a no no. I still wont use reg Windex in my home BUT it makes me feel better using the vinegar one as I assume it has to be better then the reg!

Thanks for sharing everyone!

I used a wet terrycloth towel followed by a dry one to polish.

If I have something stubborn, I spray windex on a paper towel then do the above.

This has been my method for 30+ years.

I use regular windex, the blue bottle...for decades. This has never been an issue. I spray the towels, not the tank, so probably makes a difference. But sometimes, I am lazy and spray the tank too. Never been an issue.

Also, instead of buying windex 'vinegar', just use vinegar. I clean everything in my tank with vinegar and even does vinegar. I see no issue either way.
