To reiterate what everyone else is saying, I have used many different glass cleaners. Only thing I do is spray it on some paper towel rather than the tank, and just wipe the glass with it. Never had an issue doing it that way. To be honest more stuff gets in the tank from you hands than most likely cleaning the glass.

I use a spray bottle with vinegar and water.
Works great, its cheap, and I don't have to wonder what's in it or whether it is safe.

Same..Cheap and leaves less streaks.

another thing is some of the other sprays may not just be ammonia or vinegar.
some other cleaners can have degreasers and perfumes in .

I use Autoglym car windscreen polish.
It's expensive but it's not a spray so no chance of it getting in tank.

A bottle lasts ages tho.

It doesn't just clean it polishes the glass and looks sparkling.
No smears for days.

Seriously try it.

wondering how rain x would work to keep the little salt drips off

I think this topic is over-rated. You can use most any glass cleaner, as long as it doesn't come into contact with the water. If concerned, you can always spray the cleaner on the towel/rag first - then wipe the glass clean.

Vinegar and water here. Cheap, safe, and it works. On top of that, the big problem is salt streaks on the glass from drips when I do maintenance. Vinegar is best for these anyway.

honestly I only use paper towel with nothing, works great and get the glass spotless (after the salt run is dry)

From a chemistry perspective, windex is safe to use around a tank. So's vinegar and water, and (obviously) straight-up RODI. However, never, ever use Lysol or any other product with benzalkonium chloride/bromide anywhere near a reef tank (or prefereably, anywhere in the home). That particular germicidal is deadly to marine organisms, and a little bit of overspray carried into a skimmer will wreak havoc.

Windex though contains detergents, ammonia, isopropyl alcohol - so it might really be safe from a chemistry perspective or? - BUT even with spraying - very little is likely to get into the tank - and its unlikely to cause a problem - especially near a larger tank.

I swiped my wife's Norwex towels and use water only. Bert and Ernie Cloths, they do an amazing job on our tanks.

I was told many years ago that ammonia-based glass cleaners like the original Windex was not to be used on auto glass because the ammonia destroys the rubber seals. So I've always had alcohol-based, ammonia-free glass cleaners around the house. That's what I use on the aquarium glass when I need something stronger than plain water. Lots of cleaning service people I've dealt with swear by vinegar and water, though... and newsprint for a final buffing.

I have used NuFinish car wax forever. Spills bead up, and my magnet slides so much better on the glass. Don't need to apply very often. Leaves no wax dust. So far I don't think it has been unsafe.
