I think In general external pumps can handle higher head pressure. The problem is he’s pumping from the basement to the next floor.

VarioS-8 gets you 18 feet. If you want to spend some real $ you can get 20+ with Abyzz or Royal.

The closest iwaki we can compare to has a flow rate of 2136 and tops out at 40ft vs the pump you suggested. That’s over double. DC pumps can’t handle as much head pressure as AC pumps by the way.

You probably could get a big AC pump. You would have to look at the headloss curve and take your fittings into account 90’s, 45’s, PVC size ect then match that to your desired speed.

I pump water from my basement about 80 feet up 13 or so with a varios4. (Water changes) I wouldn’t be able to use it for a return pump but it’s big brother might do the job.

The first place to start is to look at the head loss curve for the pump you want to buy. Look at the flow for the pump at the total vertical height your going. Then you have to add the loss in for your fittings and PVC diameter. Go a little over the flow you are trying to achieve. An example of a head loss chart is this

Nice chart! I’m going to need to do this shortly. I don’t have a tons I head pressure maybe 13ft but I have to cut across half of my basement which may be a problem.

In Z&K’s case I would drill the tank then if I couldn’t I would look into a new pump. Would be cheaper to drill.

From what I remember horizontal runs don’t have much effect on a return pump.

That would be very nice in my case. I wonder how it affects the overflow plumbing.

My iwaki definitely has the head height and flow rate I want. It doesn't look like the glass is tempered. Looks like I'll be drilling

I was able to find a chart like that for my pump before buying thankfully. Just thought it could suck up the water...

That’s what I was thinking, planning on using large plumbing if that helps I’ll have to research that more.
